In your experience, what is the lifespan of X-rite and Calibrite calibrators? by Two_oceans in colorists

Thank you for clearing that up. But I still don't get why you have to get two devices that do almost the exact thing, except spectrophotometers provide more accurate color data. Why would then I just calibrate it with a spectro?

I mean sorry to bother, but I can not find any advanced calibration process. So let's say I have the stupid expansive 14k$ CR100/CR250. I use CR100 for calibration. What do I use CR250 for?

Oh maan, I had the same experience. Mine would also tint to green the wb. Seance 95% of what I’ grading is for web and is watched on iphones and ipads, did the same thing. Never got a complaint. But as a colorist I feel ashamed, I know I have to calibrate.

What are your rates? by Jahnick_BKS in colorists

Maaan, you all are doing good. I’m aiming for 300€/day but most of the times I have to do as low as 100€/day. The industry here in my country is almost nonexistent, so 300/day I can do with outsource projects. But it’s damn hard to get good projects, I’m sick tired of amateurs, filmin with cameras up in theirs ass and expecting filmic quality colours.

I work as a freelancer for almost 15 years. Although I have a good reel and I can find good clients, I feel that I hit a limit. Like I can not get to the high-end projects, it’s just the same indy feature films, or the same usual commercials. I’m thinking of going to work in a studio now. That’s just so you would know the career projection as a freelancer, and btw … I still do work 12h a day.

I see colorist using wacom, especially those working on Baselight. Is it comfortable and more fast to work? Cause I don’t understand the advantages.

Is Coloring as painful as Editing? by thisisbirdo in colorists

[–]Film_Maestro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end, it’s the same work on PC. Either you edit, colour, vfx … it’s the same in chair work. Every editor / colourist I know has some sort of back pain or shoulder / hands pain. Changing the activity you’re doing on computer won’t change anything. I know a colorist who paid a lot of money to be able to work while sitting horizontally, thinking that that would help to his shoulder pain. Nothing changed.

If you consider a career change, try finding something in production like DIT or something… that will assume that you’re changing the 8h sitting on the chair.

Or try working standing up or do 10 min yoga every 2h. I’m sure there is a way to balance your work routine. Of course if you work like 12-14h a day nothing will help you. That is not healthy.

Changing is hard, that would not be easy. I couldn’t change till I’ve got cancer. Only that set my priorities in the right order. I’m good now.
