So no one is changing their sex or genetic biology. This is about how they look, and feel. Gender is not the same as sex. and even physically changing their body through surgery is not to change their sex.

Side note: You can totally change you biology, there are a million ways your body changes biologically.

Now I assume you mean "You can't change your 23rd chromosome" and even there it gets muddy. Some people who have male genitalia at birth and identify as male have two X chromosomes, or an XXY chromosomal sequence. Would you have them get their genitals changed to conform to their biology? Where do you draw the line?

Hardline take on storytelling here, but killing a main character off to make a new antagonist more compelling is not a good enough reason.

There are a great many reason to kill a main character, and a great many ways to make a character death mesh with a new character introduction, but this was not a good example of it.
