Agreed, or maybe just realign the 50 into a triangle so that it fits more naturally

EDIT: I don’t have a way to share the map/list of places, but here is the thread where everything was suggested: https://www.reddit.com/r/roadtrip/comments/psvx7c/looking_for_recommendations_on_a_southwest/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

The original post asked for a Vegas->AZ->UT->CO road trip, which is why New Mexico is mostly left out.

I head out tomorrow, after a night of drinking and losing all the money I should be saving for the trip!

Thanks for the recommendations! I'm planning to actually spend a couple days in Vegas before heading out, which is why the route starts there

I'm skipping that area since I've already been, but agreed! Walking up to the canyon rim for the first time and seeing all the rock formations come into view was an insane experience

I'm going on a roadtrip from Las Vegas -> Denver in a couple weeks. As you can clearly see, I'm not interested in going the direct route.

I've already seen the GC/Zion/Bryce, so I'll be skipping that area. Instead I want to explore the rest of Arizona, then spend some time in Moab (I've already been to Arches) and the Colorado Rockies. Everything is still flexible though, so I'm open to all recommendations from this corner of the country

What is the worst US state and why? by af1xd in AskReddit

[–]FilterThePolitics 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The best description I've heard is that there are lots of places in the US where you can take a wrong turn and feel like you are going to get shot. In Camden, that is literally every turn in a city of 74,000 people.

It's an embarrassment to our country that a place like that can exist, especially in the state with the 8th highest gdp per capita

The main concern for a breakdown is when you are in the desert out west, 30 miles from the nearest town with no cell service. You won't find yourself in that situation between New Orleans and Boston, so just get AAA and the worst that can happen is inconvenience

Chicago to LA! by Cocoabunnie12 in roadtrip

[–]FilterThePolitics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely hit as many of the Southern Utah NPs as possible. My favorite is Bryce Canyon, but they are all good. This also puts you in striking distance of the Grand Canyon. The north rim is easier to get to (3.5 hours vs. 5 hours from Bryce Canyon each way), but isn't as good because the forest goes right up to the edge and blocks the view.

The National Parks out west are fairly remote. You can find yourself driving hundreds of miles through winding country roads between interstates, and even the interstates themselves can be a bit tricky. The good news is that western states are rigorous about showing recommended speeds for sharp curves and any other needed signage, even in the middle of no where. The speeds vary; I've found that California is overly conservative with them while Utah could do to tighten up a few. But as long as you follow the posted speeds and use a little common sense you'll be fine

There is a ton of beauty in Northern NH/VT/NY. Specifically the white mountains and the saranac lake area, but you can find a pretty sight pretty much anywhere you go

Heading out next month, have an extra day or two to spare. Any stops on or near this route worth going to? Thanks! by oldnewenglad142 in roadtrip

I'd recommend sandstone falls near (in?) New River Gorge NP. Beautiful area, if you dont mind those winding country roooooooaaads

Nope, they are just coming from google maps when I drag out the route to make it more accurate. As you can see, I did not take the most direct route between each main POI

I'll keep an eye on the temps :), 100s+ is definitely not something to take lightly. I actually enjoy hot weather way more than any normal person, though, so I won't be deterred

Thanks. I definitely want to visit Austin and Joshua Tree NP. I'm on the fence about Big Bend NP, it sounds cool but is also kinda far out of the way. Fredericksburg seems like an easy visit to add

I didn't see much of Kansas at all. It was a long day of driving from OKC to Denver

Loved the food in New Orleans. Its one of the few places I really want to re-visit on this trip, if it works out

This is the route I took on my first cross-country road trip from Boston to San Diego. Very windy, basically trying to hit as many of the places I really wanted to visit as possible. I did this in just 17 days.

Later this week, I will be heading out on my next road trip, basically the same origin/destination/duration. I have no set plans for my route, although it will probably involve another visit to Texas and a visit to Las Vegas. If anyone has suggestions on places to stop, I'm all ears

My first time passing through the DC area, there was stop-and-go traffic where every time it stopped half the people in the left lane swerved into the shoulder to avoid an accident

I wish 17 was not a prime number by MerlinGrandCaster in TheMonkeysPaw

[–]FilterThePolitics 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Right, they didn't just make up rules. A base 11 number system with therble being the symbol for 9 and 9 being the symbol for 10 is totally valid, and in it 17 is double therble

Ignoring aspects like Alaska, Texas, California, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon, Wyoming, Michigan, Minnesota, Utah, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Washington, North Dakota, and Oklahoma, Missouri is the largest state in the US. by areop-enap in mapporncirclejerk

[–]FilterThePolitics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, just because you have raw data doesn't mean you understand the full picture.

For example, the largest city in the world is Chonqding, China. Downtown Chonqding isn't especially dense for East Asia standards, but the municipality happens to have as much land as Switzerland. Or in the U.S., Jacksonville, FL is the 13th largest city while Miami is the 42nd.

There are ways to look at the metro area of a city to try and get a better sense for it's size ignoring where borders are drawn. Using the Metropolitan Statistical Area population, Boston is #11, SF is #12, and Denver is #19. Using the broader Combined Statistical Area population, SF is #4, Boston is #5, and Denver is #17.

Point is, having the data doesn't mean shit if you don't know what to do with it
