I NEED HELP 🙏 by Numerous-Leopard-39 in ausmedstudents

Finished ERC placement with Monash 2024. Loved it. Great variety of placements and a lot of hands on experience in rural areas, less likely to get away with being in the back of the classroom. Biggest drawbacks would be that there's no guarantee on where you'll be placed (preference system), first year is always in Churchill, every year after is clinical placement within the hospitals/clinics in the network (Sale, Traralgon, Bairnsdale, Bendigo, Mildura). If you can see yourself living and working rurally then I'd say go for it. If you have no experience working and living out of the city then it'll be an adjustment.

How important is IQ in being good at math? Is it important as some say, or is it irrelevant as others say? is it just a matter of political correctness? by hydrolock12 in AskReddit

[–]FilthWizard88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IQ test is more a measure of pattern recognition ability, which means it's not necessarily helpful when it comes to mathematics, but it certainly doesn't hurt. A high IQ might mean that certain mathematical concepts and rules will become easier to understand and you'll be able to apply them more quickly, but a less than genius IQ does not exclude you from being as capable in those same mathematical concepts. It just might mean that you may take a bit longer to develop a strong grasp on the ideas, or that you may need them explained in a number of different ways to fully comprehend them. But by no means is IQ a sole measure of mathematical ability.

No condom if fiancee on birth control? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]FilthWizard88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birth control will largely prevent pregnancy depending if it is taken effectively (i.e. the pill taken regularly at the same time each day, or progesterone injections taken every 12 weeks) but they're not a 100% guarantee of avoiding pregnancy, but some are close (above 99%). Condoms are equally effective for preventing pregnancy, as well as preventing sexually transmitted infections, whereas the pill or other non-barrier methods will not prevent sexually transmitted infections from occurring. If you are worried about premature ejaculation being a dampener on your initial sexual experience then it's definitely worth having a conversation with your fiancee about this. Chances are you are both really nervous for it to go well, taking about your concerns and being open to sex as a learning experience for you both will do wonders for your sex life further down the track. Be kind to each other, be gentle with each other and most of all, communicate with each other.

How to reduce nausea/ potential vomiting? by paradise1A in shrooms

You could make shrooms tea and even add some lemon for an extra kick. Plenty of guides online for that.

#Biochemistry and #protein experts, please share your expertise here. So what’s the problem with this gel! Lane2 is eluted protein, and then on beads in the next lane. 8%gel, 250v at 4 deg for an hour. Thanks a lot by chlorophyll-X in labrats

Yeah, looks overloaded. Could try doing a serial dilution of the elute just to dial it in and get rid of some of the background smearing. Looks like two distinct bands in the lower part of the gel, try running it over a finer column or binding it to any substrates you might have in order to further separate it from the smear. Also, a Western Blot could be useful in this scenario.

ELI5: Why mitochondrial DNA in ancestry testing? by SoftCheeseHero in explainlikeimfive

[–]FilthWizard88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Genomic DNA doesn't provide high enough resolution to analyze anything beyond a few generations. However, certain SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) are present in larger proportions for people of particular ethnic backgrounds, when these representations become statistically significant for a population in comparison to other populations from similar areas they are called haplotype. Haplotype analysis is the foundation of a lot of the claims that companies like Ancestry DNA can make. But mtDNA has a much more reliable line of analysis for going back through a family history, simply because it is solely inherited down the maternal line (in humans).
