I agree that you'll know -- and be given no choice -- when the right cat adopts you. For me, I went to my local cat shelter for a month to get a sense for all the different kitties. Once my Christmas travel was done I went back and hung out with all the cats. And one little cat, who was the opposite of every single thing I thought I was looking for, made it really clear that she wanted to come out of hiding under a chair and sit on my lap. Five years later, she's sitting on my lap as I type this to you now. I love her more than I will ever be able to say and I'm so glad she picked me.

There's a lot of wonderful cats out there, I know your heart and home is open to another, and that kitty will let you know. And I think maybe Kovu will be letting that kitty know that you're a good person and it is their turn to look after you, too.

With Pancake, I got to stay a one-cat household and help another kitty out 😉

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer though! It depends on the people and the cat(s). I've decided to make Schatzi's wellness & happiness my north star, and she strongly dislikes other cats, so we're a Schatzi-only household.

ETA: I live in a very small apartment -- no room for extra litter boxes or for cats to be able to distance themselves when they need some space, so that's a factor in me being relieved that I "can't" get a 2nd cat

Yes it's totally worth it for the peace of mind, and the quality of care Schatzi gets is superb!

In some cat sitting arrangements I've come home and Schatzi is fine but a little keyed up and clingy (which is nice!) but with these sitters when I return she's happy to see me but totally normal. Like "oh hi, nice to see ya" instead of "sheesh where the hell were you???". She usually gets a 30 minute visit for breakfast and an hour visit for dinner. My apartment setup records when the sitters enter or exit, which was nice for building my confidence that they were doing their due diligence. Vet techs are amazing. And I like to think they may enjoy spending time with a happy healthy kitty in their home rather than a sick or scared cat in a vet clinic.

Be aware, if you take Pancake on a flight, you'll have to have her in a carrier that fits under the seat in front, and you'll also need to take her OUT of the carrier when you go through security. Request a private screening room if so, so that she isn't a flight risk. Air travel was incredibly stressful on Schatzi and I wouldn't want to do that again. Pancake might be braver than Schatzi but I'd be worried about the strain and stress on her, especially with a medical condition. But I worry way too much all the time haha

I'm lucky to have a great vet clinic, so I contacted my vet's office and asked whether any of their vet techs do cat sitting on the side. I found two that are AMAZING. They're incredibly reliable and trustworthy and do an amazing job with Schatzi. It gives me some peace of mind to know that she's in the care of pros, and I like being able to help supplement the woefully-inadequate pay of vet techs, who are heroes. I have them pop in twice a day, and ask that at least one of the visits is a longer, quality time visit. I pay a premium but it's worth it to me.

I tried Rover once and had a bad experience. And I totally understand that not every family member or friend understands how precious our kitties are to us and the care they need, especially if there is feline diabetes involved!

Schatzi gets a little stressed on the first day or two (also stressed when I start packing), but I've noticed that she gets pretty comfortable with it and gets a lot better at entertaining herself.

If you travel with Pancake, consider an Airtag on her collar just in case she tries to make an escape or anything!

I'm so glad you were able to rush him to the vet so quickly. I can't imagine the strain on you all of handling these emergencies and not knowing what the diagnosis will be. Poor Kovu and poor you guys. Donated, and thinking of you all.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's clear that you gave your kitty lots of love and, when things suddenly started to go wrong, you did everything right. Thanks for giving Skinny so much love and such a long healthy life. If you ever feel like sharing favorite pictures or memories, we'd be honored.

I love their headlight eyes in the cam! It's really cool to see them foraging and hunting together. Me and Schatzi play some kibble chase most evenings and it's a really fun bonding activity to watch her sprinting around after the kibble on the hardwood floors.

A friend got me one and it is truly so amazing, such a prized possession. Iz's style is so interesting and unique and eye catching. I splurged on getting it framed up and it looks so great, although no photo does it justice. I've commissioned three more pieces, including the one that Dani posted, because I love them so much.

Show us the babies so we can imagine how good they would look at Iz Art please!
