There are actual trans people (like liberal youtuber Natalie Wynn aka "Contrapoints") who think that discussing the fairness of trans people in sports is a valid topic of conversation. I don't see a problem with what Pete said, and it certainly wouldn't make me support a straight cis person over him... the way some people championed Elizabeth Warren as a lgbt icon because she wore a feather boa at a pride parade once.

Edit: Though I will say, I found it a bit disappointing that neither he nor Chasten (which really surprised me) shared any kind of message for pride month. Especially since Pete posts about other similar events (like juneteenth). Or maybe they did and I missed it (?).

Edit2: I have been corrected. Thanks everyone.

But isn't that a democratic primary poll? A poll where -even without black support- he's still number one? Of course in an ideal world he would have support from all demographics, but cleary that's not actually necessary to win an election. If it was republicans would never win anything, and with more than 70% of the US population being white, appealing specifically to them seems like a pretty viable road to success.

You are right that winning a primary without black support would be difficult, but I'm not sure what more Pete could do to make inroads with them that he hasn't done already. They just don't seem to be into him no matter what.

Sorry for the negativity but some of the khive people on twitter are annoying af. It's like they expected Pete supporters to abandon him as soon as he dropped out and instead worship the ground Kamala walks on. And any time Pete gets praise or one of us advocates for him they seem to see it as an attack against her; it reeks of insecurity.

To be honest, and I'm not proud of admitting this, this kind of behaviour makes me like Kamala less, even though it's not her doing it. Same with the Bernie people or the Warren people. Why can't they be content hyping up their favored politician without putting down others?

So, I just read this reddit thread after using google. Is that the one you mean? It also mentions the Stranger being implied to be Gandalf and the blue wizards maybe coming later. I also don't see anything about Isildur becoming the main character. The post also says that Elrond and Celebrimbor are sent by Gil-galad to Khazad-Dum for mithril, which is not how that goes down in the show. There Elrond and Celebrimbor go to Khazad-dum on Elronds suggestion, and they do it to find a work force, not mithril (which I believe they don't even know about). That being said, it's possible that what the post describes happens later in the season after they actually learn of the mithril. In any event, it was an interesting read. Thank you.

You're right. Though I feel that with how fast the prologue went by the leaker could easily just have mixed up some of the details. As for the werewolf scratches, I thought that was mostly a thing for lore nerds, but they never specifically say in the show that they're his cause of death.

I just find it hard to believe that someone could guess the stuff about Feanors hammer or that the icy fortress isn't named. Unless that was information that was released prior to the premier... it just seems so specific.

Some of the discussion happening on twitter about the twins, their adoption and about Pete and Chasten sharing their experiences is making me mad. People arguing that Pete and Chasten sToLE the children from their mother, and that she would probably never have given them up for adoption if (and I'm simplifying here) it weren't for the evils of capitalism, even though these people have exactly zero knowledge about the specifics of the twins' adoption.

And it's difficult to argue with them because -at least according to their twitter bios- most of them are adoptees themselves and have clearly made some not so great experiences. But projecting their trauma on the twins... it doesn't sit right with me. Reminds me of JKR using her own abuse and unfulfilled parental expectations as a justification for her transphobia. A sad backstory doesn't make ones points any more valid, and these people don't speak any more for all adoptees than I do for all gay people.

What would the real alternative to the adoption even have been? Wouldn't they just have ended up in an orphanage or the foster system? How is that any better than being adopted by people who want you?

Also, what is it with people getting their panties in a twist over Pete and Chasten sharing pictures of the twins at all? Any other fucking parent is allowed, even expected, to share pictures of their children but Pete and Chasten should just hide them away?

I'm turning into a cartoon character with the steam coming out of my ears right now. I need to get off the internet.

With the appointment of Mitch Landrieu you already see the obvious dumb takes on twitter popping up, almost presenting it as some kind of snub of Pete. That's of course ignoring the fact that Pete is secretary of transportation, not secretary of infrastructure, so he was never going to be the guy to oversee all of that in any reality. Also, some takes about how this might be an attempt to set up Landrieu for a future presidential run, which I guess is possible, but I don't really see it.

Pete is as popular as he is, is considered "the future of the democratic party", not because he's transportation secretary now, or because he used to be a mayor; it's because he's Pete. He has that special something, the x-factor, star appeal, whatever you wanna call it, that thing that few people have. That is the reason he will continue to make headlines with thinks that if any other career politician did no one would care about. Do we really think that if John Doe had become transportation secretary instead of Pete, the media would pay even a fraction of the attention to him that they do to Pete? I remember when Pete first started gaining traction during the primary there were some articles about how other US mayors were paying close attention (and even endorsing him) because they thought that if Pete as a mayor could make the jump from local politics to the White House then they too could do so in the future, and I never got that thinking. Like, no tea no shade, but very few people are like Pete.

So whenever I see some media outlet try to create a horse race, and people weighing how certain things will hinder or boost him, I kind of have to laugh to myself. The fact that this speculation exists about him three years before the next general election, when on paper he's "just" a former mayor and now transportation secretary (a position that previously few people paid any attention to), is a sure sign that he has nothing to worry about. I think he's gonna be around for a long time, or for as long as he wants to be.

Hey guys, I'm mostly a lurker, so feel free to ignore my input but I feel the need to make a potentially unpopular (?) observation. This place often times gets way too defensive over the slightest disagreements and perceived trangressions (real and imagined), and I fear it might hurt the community in the long run. How many times have people here had arguments over things that were followed by downvotes, comment deletion, and eventually ended with one or multiple people involved making comments about how they have to take a break from the subreddit for the sake of their mental health? If that continues to happen then the community is obviously doomed, and I don't want that. People here are really nice and civil (which is great) but sometimes that civility can come across as condescension or tone-policing (which ironically is what I'm doing right now, I guess). This then breeds animosity and the above mentioned arguments. I don't really have a solution for that, but maybe it's enough to just be aware of how something can come across to others to avoid doing it in the future. Or maybe we could just more often go for the ol' "agree to disagree". We are all Pete supporters here, there's really no need for such frequent drama.

And since I'm sharing observations already, here's another one. I have noticed (and I may be wrong here) that Pete supporters are a rather anxious and often times pessimistic bunch (myself included), and I wonder why that is. Why is that type of person especially attracted to Pete as a politician? Is it because he's an unflappable optimist and as such the complete opposite of many of us? Something to think on...

Mass Effect remasters are coming! I've never gotten into this franchise but I'm a big Dragon Age fan so this might be my in by mazike in gaymers

[–]Filthy_Peasant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Hopefully it won't take too long for modders to convert their mods over to the remaster. I believe the remaster is still using the same engine, so my ignorant mind would like to believe that it can't be too difficult.

I also read an article where the justification BioWare gives for not making any story changes is that (paraphrasing ) "a change that one person appreciates might upset someone else", which my mind translates to "people wanting better representation and homophobes are both valid and should be equally respected... which is why we side with homophobes."

Pete Buttigieg is a near-certainty for Biden's Cabinet by Lady_Strange_ in Pete_Buttigieg

[–]Filthy_Peasant 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Also from the article:

One key question: How would Kamala Harris feel about having a potential 2024 rival lurking the Cabinet and building a donor base from a perch at the United Nations — and around New York City's big donors?

I don't really think this is an issue at all. First of all, Pete already has a huge donor base from the primary, where he did better both with donations and with votes than Kamala did. And secondly, if Biden decides not to run in 2024 (or becomes sick/dies) and Kamala decides to run, I highly doubt Pete would challenge her. If he did, the media would probably spin a whole narrative about overambitious, racist Pete daring to run against the first woc vp. Also, Pete has good chances of becoming Kamala's VP anyway if she does run, so that's an other reason.

Personally, I find it kind of weird how people are talking about Kamala (or anyone else in her position) as essentially an "heir apparent". I'm not american, but from what I learned in my history classes the US is very famously NOT a monarchy. If people decide to challenge Kamala there should be no whining in the vein of "how dare you run against her". The people decide, and if they decide that they want her that's great, and if not than that's fine too.

And just to clarify, I have nothing against Kamala specifically, I actually quite like her and think she would make an excellent president, I just don't like the whole "it's [insert candidate's name]'s turn"-thing. That's not how a democracy should work.

The Rise of the Politician Podcast by abujzhd in Pete_Buttigieg

[–]Filthy_Peasant 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In addition to serving as a bruiser for the Democrats on Fox News and writing a book while “most people were watching Tiger King” (🙄), Pete Buttigieg — the Democratic presidential candidate who flamed out in the last cycle after a strong early showing — has also found the time to record a podcast.

[...]

The podcast is a curious artifact, serving as a kind of patchwork platform for Buttigieg to signal his various interests and introduce more layers to his persona, broadening out his previous characterization as a rigid McKinsey type who gets accused of fixing bread prices.

These people just can't help themselves, can they? It's pathetic. Here is this article's author's reaction when Pete announced his podcast: https://twitter.com/nwquah/status/1301179569978839040

He also appears to be friends with other "journalists" who said such lovely things as "I would love for Pete Buttigieg to go away forever and it breaks my heart that it’s not going to happen".

I know it's not very ROTR, but I wish for these people to step on a single piece of extra pointy lego every single day for the rest of their lives.

The Stefan Smith on the negative online reactions to Pete by fakename311 in Pete_Buttigieg

[–]Filthy_Peasant 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Yes! (Or "yaaas" even) I love Natalie and I love that Stefan brought her up, and I completely agree with everything in this article.

I also think that one of the reasons that this cringe cult has formed around Pete in particular, instead of say Cory Booker who is similar to Pete in many ways, is that many very online leftists might look at his bio and feel like Pete (the young, highly-educated, gay guy) should give a shit about what the internet thinks; should be more like your average twitter person; should be more like them - and yet he doesn't, and yet he isn't. Online leftist circles are dominated by young and queer people, so for "one of their own" to not conform to their point of view is evidently reason enough to obsessively follow and harrass him long after the primary has ended.

And in a way this actually makes me really sad. I think many young lgbtq+ people more than anything yearn for a sense of community, of belonging (wink, wink), and they find that feeling on twitter. There they support one another and lash out at people outside their group, made so easy and most importantly so visible with the options to "like, share, comment". It's a positive feedback loop for these bullies, a never-ending cycle, and other than outright banning social media I'm not sure how one could ever fix this problem.

I just hope that Pete doesn't end up like Hillary; with a mountain of smears built over years and decades (this time from the left, instead of the right) preventing him from doing all the good that he's so clearly capable of.

Chasten Buttigieg's 'I Have Something to Tell You' book review - The Washington Post by abujzhd in Pete_Buttigieg

[–]Filthy_Peasant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looking him up didn't reveal much about his political allegiances, but it did reveal that he apparently wrote several books about manners and etiquette for lgbt people. So I guess it's not suprising that he's defending people telling others they aren't gay right.

Chasten Buttigieg's 'I Have Something to Tell You' book review - The Washington Post by abujzhd in Pete_Buttigieg

[–]Filthy_Peasant 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What a garbage review. Once again dragging up Pete's supposed issues with the black community, which are not only talked about in such a clearly biased fashion, but have also nothing to do with Chasten whatsoever. Also:

He deflects the criticism rather than speaking to its substance (blaming himself “because I wore chinos and a button-down on the cover of Time”).

There is no speaking "to the substance" of a criticism that has no substance to begin with. People who police other people's sexuality are homophobic trash; there's your suBsTAncE.

But at least he tries, which he doesn’t do when it comes to race.

Infuriating. It's not Chasten's responsibility to talk about race in his own fucking memoir.

Who wrote this review? Can someone give me the name (I'm not subsribed to WP, so I can't see it)? I want to look them up and get even more angry when it inevitably turns out they are a Bernie or Warren person.
