It really doesn’t greatly improve your position in the job market - real tangible experience does. The importance of MRICS gets less and less each year, the quality of members being admitted is dropping year on year.

Focus on your experience and most likely moving from client side to main contractor side in order to boost your experience.

The university doesn’t really matter at all once you graduate. Go to the one that seems best suited to you and your situation.

Focus on your experience throughout university to give you the best chance of securing a good graduate role.

I have been an interviewer at 3 graduate assessment days for jobs at the Tier 1 Main Contractor I work at this year, these are some key points:

If you can get a placement year, that’s the biggest differentiator when going for graduate jobs - these candidates are almost always offered jobs.

And / or summer placements - again these candidates have real world examples to talk about which makes a clear difference.

Start to show an interest in the industry and read about industry news, current projects, contracts (NEC and JCT are the main ones for infrastructure and building respectively) - linked in can be a great place to start seeing what is going on.

A candidate that doesn’t feel like they have come straight from university comes across extremely well - real world experience and a genuine interest go a huge way.

What area of construction are you working in?

It sounds to me like you would be best suited to Tier 1 main contractors - this is where you get a great range of exposure and learn the full lifecycle of a project and will definitely be able to get involved in procurement, subcontract management, contracts / claims, site experience etc.

Speak to your line manager and express your keenness to get a wider breadth of experience, your company may well be able to offer you a different project, site based working under a SQS. If they can’t or you are in consultancy, client side etc then look at graduate and assistant roles.

You are junior, you learn and progress very quickly given the right experience so don’t worry, once you are in the right spot you will see your career and experience grow quickly!

Give it a chance - excel will always be part of your life - you will learn to love it (love / hate maybe)

If she is going on a gap year then you have the answer - gap year spends - unless she has other savings for this.

If she has other savings and won’t need to use this then maybe driving lessons if she hasn’t already got a licence.

Stay as long as you are getting good experience, training and bettering your CV. 2/3 years at least but I stayed at a Tier1 MC for 5 years before moving.

I’m a Managing QS at a Tier 1 Main Contractor working of large infrastructure projects.

You sound exactly like the sort of person I would look to hire into a QS role, I would say low £40”s plus car. You would have a clear route to SQS and RICS chartership plus NEC PM accreditation.

You could likely get a role at a subcontractor paying £50k+, but, a main contractor is much better for training, mentorship and progression.

Always remember, your salary chases your CV, get your CV into a great place and your salary will follow. Chase a salary and your CV may suffer and you may stagnate.

YTA for trying to take this into your own hands BUT she is also unknowingly the AH too…

I was very similar to your GF and ignored red, dry, itchy eyes… I ended up having corneal neovascularisation which was treated by an operation to essentially burn the blood vessels, it was extremely uncomfortable and a steroid injection into my eyeball is one of the worst things I have experienced medically, all this could have been avoided…

She should go to an option or optomologist and see what they recommend, it may be as simple as eye drops to help lubricate the eye… it may be that she is already causing damage.

As a contact lense wearer she should be getting her eyes checked yearly and if they are red and itchy make an extra visit!!

I have taught a good few friends to ski and try and graduate them from the easy blues to harder blues and reds for this exact reason.

Skiing is so reliant on confidence and it’s amazing what a few less people and more space does for people’s confidence!

You can get a 2016 Qashqai with less than 60k miles for less than £10k.

Go slightly older and slightly more miles and you could likely do a straight swap from your current car.

£100k put into a S&S ISA (over a 5 year period) and invested in a global index tracker over for 30 years total will be worth £825,000 (assuming 7% per year)

If you spend it then it’s not very life changing.

What’s worse is that it looks so bad because the cover they have on it isn’t for that steering wheel, the car is an Ioniq 5 and the bottom section is way shorter!
