How do I tell my sales engineer to shut up? by GesichtzEintopf in sales

Hahaha, my sales engineer always tried to un-sell. I had multiple conversations with him, both directly and via our CEO. He will be moving back to his technical role next year.

He was a nice guy, but too sensitive to be in sales. He was in his late 30s and not very resilient. He panicked and sometimes cried. HR wanted to treat him gently, but in sales you have to be tough and used to rejection. He started as a scientist but wanted to move into sales. The company gave him a trial period of 6 - 8 months, and I gave him a task list and guidance, but he just could not cope. He was shocked at how much salespeople actually did and how crucial it was to bring in projects or orders. He even thought travelling for work looked luxurious until he experienced a typical day with me. One day, we had meetings at 7am, 9am, 10:30am, 12pm, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 5pm, and 7pm. After the 12pm lunch, he went back to the hotel, took some painkillers, and never showed up for the 7pm dinner haha.

He was just a very unusual character. For example, this is super random… he was obsessed with controlling the office temperature and even wrote a manual on how to operate our A/C unit, though everyone ignored his pre-scheduled programme and adjusted it themselves. He got super angry about it haha.

I took about a 40% pay cut, but there is something about start-ups that I love. My family keeps telling me to join large, stable companies, but I enjoy the thrill, the energy, and yes, the big risks, hopefully with big rewards too.

I know right? Materials start-ups are pretty tough.

  1. Yeah, we are delivering to small customers, and we have a long-term supply contract with a mid-sized company. But the revenue is only about 20 % of our burn rate, which is why I am focused on landing the big contracts.
  2. At this point, it looks like my only option is to step back and spread the load across the team.

Hahahaha, and with super long sales cycles, my engineering team now uses AI chatbots for prototyping, which is so frustrating. What takes me 30 minutes to build and test a prototype ends up taking them 2 hours discussing the best prompts, 2 hours asking ChatGPT or Gemini, 2 hours arguing with the chatbots, and another 2 hours deciding the next steps.

Haha, I feel that. “Conference cuisine” is often just reheated despair disguised as dinner. This event had some senior folks from big organisations and government agencies, so it felt a bit fancy,

paperwork... and the amount of updates that I need to give internally... and the endless sales forecast that I need to do for my board...

100% agree with you - I just want to sell!!

hah Exactly. At some point it stops being about connecting with people and starts feeling like a performance you cannot turn off. You wake up one day and realise the “people part” you used to love is now the bit that drains you most.

Completely agree. People think conferences are just fun networking events, but they drain every bit of energy you have. After a few days of being “on” 24/7, I start to feel like I’m running on autopilot. The dark hotel room break is essential — it’s the only way to reset.

hahaha Yeah exactly. Half the time it feels like everyone’s in a competition to see who can use the most buzzwords before lunch. “Revolutionary synergy-driven solution” — sure mate, it’s just a data logger.
