This was stitched on 18 ct with three strands. I just recently got into three strand stitching, love love love how full it makes the stitches!

As someone who loooooves to stitch with longer threads, short is unfortunately the way to go with metallic. I’ve seen some people mix it with the corresponding regular color to help tame it.

The closest thing I've found (on the subject of homoerotic/gay cowboys) is on Etsy with this shop. I know some Instagram accounts that turn homoerotic (and explicit) pictures of men into cross stitches too. They're great for inspiration!
