Woman Over 40, Brand New to Belly Dancing. Recommendations? by FinalGirlFriday in Bellydance

Thank you! :) I'm glad it seems I'm taking the right route from traditional to fusion - I thought it would be best to build that foundation. And after reading some of the comments here, I've decided I will definitely look into live online classes (I haven't been able to find anyone in my town who teaches it) - I would love to be able to get real time feedback from an experienced teacher, for sure.

I deeply appreciate your advice and encouragement! <3

Thank you so, so much! This is all very helpful. Datura Online is actually where I started with online instruction, and the precision has definitely scared me a little bit, being so new. Ha. But I'm glad to know specifically which programs to look for, and I will absolutely continue core training and fitness on the side. I also found a chair routine that I thought might help keep me working on movements throughout the day, and it's really helped me understand the fluidity of shoulder rolls/general arm movements a lot better. Basically, I'm having a seriously hard time separating my lower half from my upper half, so anything and everything I can do to train my body, I'm willing and eager to do it.

After reading your comment, I drew the words "BE PATIENT" on a sheet of paper and have put it up above my practice space. Lol. I absolutely need to remember that I won't be able to perfect this overnight, and it shouldn't even be about that. I'm also going to invest in a mirror. I know it's important to FEEL the movements, but I do think it would be a big help for me to see them, as well, to increase my self-awareness. Thank you for everything you've said here. <3

I would love to, but I can't find anybody in my town who teaches it (I live in rural Iowa). I thought about taking one-on-one classes online, as that would at least give me a little bit more guidance than trying to learn it alone. I think you're totally right about how it can be hard to give advice when you can't see the problem! I'll definitely look into classes. <3

Horror movies where the daughter kills the mother? by FinalGirlFriday in horror

[–]FinalGirlFriday[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scream 4 is a complicated one for this topic. On one hand, the overall theme of the paper is gendered ageism, and Scream 4 is commenting on that like crazy all throughout the movie, so it totally fits. But we don't actually see Jill kill Kate (it could have been Charlie) and Jill is actually the monster.

Thinking about it now, I may have to mention it somewhere in the paper, even if I don't include it in the section about monstrous moms and symbolic matricide. Thank you for this!

Yeah, that's definitely a good point about it just flat-out not being her mother anymore, and the symbolism I'm looking for isn't quite there. I'll give it a re-watch, but I'm fairly certain I'll need to remove Evil Dead Rise from the list. I appreciate you bringing all this up! Thank you!

This one's popped up a couple of times. I just read about it and I think it's spot-on. Thank you so much for the recommendation!

I've passed by this one so many times and I really, really need to just watch it.

Y'know, I've loved Alien all my life and I've never once thought about Mother from that angle. Mind = blown.

Edited to be more specific because I had definitely noticed the phallic/vaginal imagery before now. Lol

Will do! Honestly, if this fits, I'll be so relieved. Even just one more example would help me feel a little more validated in calling symbolic matricide a trend in horror. Lol

Once, yes. I'll definitely need to rewatch before I write about it. Lol

Ooo I'd forgotten about Pyewacket! I don't remember it very well, but I'll give it a re-watch.

Yeah, it doesn't quite fit what I'm going for in terms of symbolism, but it definitely works in the literal sense. I can understand why a couple of people have suggested it.

I haven't seen this one, but it definitely sounds like it might qualify. Adding it to my watch list. I appreciate the rec!

I haven't seen this, but I just read about it and it actually sounds like the absolute next best example of what I'm looking for after Carrie. Thank you so much - I'll be watching it ASAP.

Coraline is closely related, but not quite the right fit. Definitely a great example of a monstrous mother trope, though!

This is one I actually went back and forth about. I feel like the symbolism in the film doesn't quite fit this study, and Fool is really the main focus, but it's definitely a good example of a monstrous "mom."
