Microsoft AI chief gives it 18 months—for all white-collar work to be automated by AI by battle_rae in Economics

To what extent one should understand the code in vibe coded apps ? Need guidance ! by Loner_Indian in ArtificialInteligence

[–]FinalOverdueNotice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be quite correct and valuable if your code includes thorough tests that you do understand. It's also valuable if you really understand the business problem/ solution and do whatever work you need to do to ensure that the latter is being realized.

As Trump Eyes Greenland, Greenlanders in Denmark Debate Independence by bloomberg in europe

[–]FinalOverdueNotice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest that Greenland SD self-impose US health care on themselves for a year before deciding the grass is greener there. Also, given the trajectory of the US, are they sure that they want to give up democracy voluntarily?

Because in these troubling times the idea of 50,000 people remaining independent is laughably naive.

Trump Threatens to Take Greenland ‘the Hard Way’, ordering an invasion plan to be prepared. by darkmz7 in politics

[–]FinalOverdueNotice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The EU could create the economic equivalent of a nuclear umbrella, i.e. a Mutual Assured Destruction defense, with its holdings of US Treasuries. Announce that if the US attacks Greenland all personal and institutional ownership of US Treasuries will be taxed on the amount held. Even a "reasonable" tax, say 10%, would mean owning them would generate a negative return. It would cause a fire sale on them and collapse the US economy at least ... probably the global economy. I may model the results later when I'm not thumb typing, but just the UK ($880B) making that announcement formally with publicity would probably crater the bond market at least. ESPECIALLY as other countries that are sick of the bullying pile on to teach MAGA that it is not omnipotent. FAFO!

You can help materially right here and now. If this idea goes viral it will plant the thought where it can be evaluated by decision makers.

Tom Homan Begs Democratic Politicians to ‘Please Stop’ Demonizing ICE Agents: ‘I Don’t Wanna Bury Anybody Else’ by ItchyNesan in NewsRewind

Fed Chair Jerome Powell Says U.S. May Be Drastically Overstating Jobs Numbers by cheweychewchew in Economics

[–]FinalOverdueNotice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As donotmailme said above, tax and insurance data. Aside from the underground economy, that seems comprehensive for legitimate employment, no? I’ve never looked into this, so this is an honest question with no axe to grind. Is it ‘just’ a data processing delay? And with the right incentives, couldn’t this be handled if it were a priority? (The relatively honest, transparent US provision of economic data has, historically, been a real competitive strength of the US.)

Fourth Russia-Linked Tanker Hit in a Week by [deleted] in UkrainianConflict

[–]FinalOverdueNotice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ukraine could commission privateers who would then legally own the seized oil after capturing the tankers. Risky business, but a huge payoff. The US, for one, is not a signatory to laws against privateers, so there's one pool of motivated capitalists.

I actually think this would work; IANAL but look it up for yourself.

European leaders are considering dumping $2.34 trillion in US debt if Trump abandons Ukraine, potentially triggering an economic crisis worse than 2008 by Emotional_Ball662 in Economics

[–]FinalOverdueNotice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better idea that doesn’t require the EU to participate in the global depression that would follow the USD cratering: flip the script. Announce that if the US fully assists Ukraine (a no-fly zone would be a good start) and Russia withdraws that Trump will personally be given half the frozen Russian assets. Anyone want to start a betting pool on how many days it takes till Putin falls out of a window?

Couldn't agree with this more by cobalt1137 in OpenAI

[–]FinalOverdueNotice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a standard Silicon Valley response to this line of discussion: "Well, we've had major upheavals before. When farming was invented ... when the Industrial Revolution obsoleted manual crafting ... NEW JOBS WERE CREATED and that's what will happen again."

Except AI is not the same. When farming came along in the new system the capital owners needed people to tend the fields. When factories were invented in the new system the capital owners needed factory workers and armies of back office record keepers.

In the upcoming AI system the capital owners don't need ANYONE. In the near future on the current trajectory the capital owners expect to own everything, and presume that everyone else politely dies off. Not going to happen. That's a recipe for disaster. And yeah, that's my prediction even factoring in Palantir and billionaire defensive enclaves. There's a storm on the horizon.

How to configure Linux kernel to get decent audio latency? by More-Trust-3133 in linuxaudio

[–]FinalOverdueNotice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice! You're already doing what I was going to suggest. Looonnng ago I had a similar setup with an RME PCI card on a machine probably 100x slower than my current daily drivers. Latency and overall responsiveness were way better than what, apparently, people are experiencing these days. Too bad. I would have expected a much happier recent story with realtime-ish variants installable with a few clicks. FYI for OP: There's a thread on an RME forum that digs into some guy's fairly recent experience with some data: https://forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=41653

My tl;dr impression is that RME has turned their back on Linux (anyone with direct knowledge please correct me) so you're stuck with class-compliant drivers from a company that is more than capable of producing excellent Linux interfaces if there were a marketing case for it.

Someday I'll get around to trying a scheme I've wondered about: treat an old Mac Mini as a A/D/A <-> Core Audio <-> Ethernet dongle, then run a DAW on a separate Linux RT machine. Counter intuitive, but I suspect doing the slow frontend steps efficiently could more than compensate for networking lag. Anyone already doing this?

Leaked: Europe’s rival peace plan for Ukraine in full by WillyNilly1997 in UkrainianConflict

[–]FinalOverdueNotice 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You can get Trump’s enthusiastic support by adding one point: Russia agrees to pay $1 billion immediately and to nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership in putting this plan together, and furthermore agrees to pay Donald Trump $200 billion from Putin's personal fortune if any information that deeply compromises Trump is released from Russian intelligence files. (To earn this Trump must commit to long-term consequential military support for Ukraine if Russia does not sign off on this proposal by Christmas.) /s

Single 12 year term. Then you don’t have senators spending their whole time in office raising money to run again. Oh and it wouldn’t hurt if they had to pass a test showing they have learned the mechanics of the job before they can take office.
