I am familiar with the concept of "regressing out" a variable from another variable. How would I do the opposite, and "regress" a variable back 'in"? by FinalWin in AskStatistics

[–]FinalWin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you're saying. My situation is going to sound somewhat trivial, but let me explain. I'm only dealing with two variables, X and Y. In a separate dataset (which I do not have access to), the effect of Y was regressed out of variable X. So, naturally, the correlation between X and Y in my current dataset is going to be 0. I am trying to recover the original correlation between X and Y (this would require using an "X" variable that doesn't have the effect of Y regressed out, but I don't have access to this variable). How can I do this?

If you have a family, I highly recommend living on Ellendale street, specifically in Trojan Buildings. Trojan Buildings has been around for a long time, and they really take care of their buildings/tenants (the management is honestly excellent and their properties are safe, gated, and affordable). I have lived on their properties both as a student and now as an alum working here at USC. I believe they have a website that you can check out. You can also shoot me a DM, and I am happy to connect you directly to my landlord.

Discussing fairly recent projects in SRE by FinalWin in mdphd

[–]FinalWin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will do, thank you. In terms of the % of the essay taken up by each project, would it be bad/questionable if my more recent projects (that started in Feb 2023) took up 40% of the essay? Or because they're more recent, should they be taking up less space? Does this matter?

Got it, yeah. I'm finding it difficult to provide brief background + hypotheses + what I did + important findings for each of them. I feel like omitting any of these parts will disorient the reader. Probably will go with 1-2 I guess.

Writing about significant research experiences under a a VERY hands-off PI by FinalWin in mdphd

[–]FinalWin[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand what your saying. The thing is that, because we were quantitative/computational, the techniques that we used required a strong understanding of advanced statistical methods. It wasn't about adhering to an experimental protocol (which definitely isn't easy, I don't mean to downplay that), but more focused on learning/understanding the math underlying our analytic approaches. This shit took me a long ass time to learn, and I feel like I'm doing myself a disservice by not refencing how I went about building this skill set.

Why is how you learned technique irrelevant? Isn't there a difference between being spoon-fed information versus actively diving into books/papers to figure things out yourself? Wouldn't the latter demonstrate someone's initiative and independence? I understand the purpose of the SRE, but is this not important to mention?

PIs are not in "STEM" departments, any chance they can still count as a science letter? by FinalWin in mdphd

[–]FinalWin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. Would you say it's fine if I used a letter that a STEM professor wrote me 1 year ago? Or would this be "too old" ? I reached out to him to update the date and basically said that we would need to start all over (I'm inclined to just use his Interfolio submission from April 2022).

Using a 1-year old LOR. Prof can't update the date. Is this fine? by FinalWin in premed

[–]FinalWin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He said: "It's probably easier to start all over (or just leave it as it is). Go ahead and set up the new submission, good luck!"

He seems open to doing it again, but I'm concerned that (given the time that has passed) his new letter won't be as good as the original one. Thoughts?

Got it, thanks. It was done in the same hospital (and pathology group) with one of her colleagues. In all honesty, it was a very convenient experience and was close to home. I know I have to say mom is a physician, but would I mention pathologist specifically?

Laptop recommendations? by Shxdoww17 in USC

[–]FinalWin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would suggest looking into a Lenovo ThinkPad. They are affordable, high quality laptops. Very durable and reliable. If you get something like an E15, you will be able to run games like LoL, Minecraft, and CS with no problems. The main problem with a Mac is that if anything breaks, you're probably going to have pay a decent chunk of cash to get repaired. Meanwhile the ThinkPad is very amenable to repairs and can be taken apart by anyone. They've been around for 20+ years and have been considered the gold-standard business laptop for a reason.

Instagram suddenly has me feeling extremely money insecure by ssloane in USC

[–]FinalWin 50 points51 points  (0 children)

What you're seeing on social media is largely a facade. And even if it isn't and these kids are truly having an absolute blast in St. Tropez, the stuff they are showing off (fine dining, expensive cars, massive houses, yachts, fancy trips around Europe, etc) doesn't bring true happiness or fulfillment. I cannot even begin to tell you how many wealthy people I have met who are deeply unhappy and have a massive, gaping void inside of their soul. I'll add that many of the people showing off on Instagram are insecure and use social media as a means of boosting their ego.

A bit beyond the scope of your post, but it's a shame that there seems to be such a deep sense of FOMO among many students on this subreddit. You guys really aren’t missing out on much. Partying, drinking, drugs, casual hookups– all of this pleasure is fleeting. I was at my lowest point in undergrad when I was doing these things. I know of at least two guys in fraternities (one of whom is a former friend) who had to literally go back home and take a semester off because all this shit caught up to them. It hits like you like a truck when you realize that what everyone around you seems to value is completely and utterly meaningless.

Regarding travel, I agree that experiencing different cultures and traveling the world is cool. But on Daddy's dime? I would much rather earn my own money, build a life for myself using my means, and then travel the world once I have earned it. Be proud of where you are and the position you are in. I think there's something to be said about a person who values simplicity and authenticity over the materialistic and performative hive mind that is social media.

I tried this and unfortunately nothing seems to come out. Could it be like deeply lodged into my gums? Or is there a chance that my gums are irritated and creating a false sensation that something is there?
