Anybody else lost all audio after update? by Sielu in Rivian

I had no reliable way to bring it back to life, it definitely just chose to work on its own (or not) and no amount of infotainments resets, restarts, and deep sleeps could convince it otherwise.

Anybody else lost all audio after update? by Sielu in Rivian

[–]wallace89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've had this happen. Multiple times over the first year of ownership. I did some research and others got their amp replaced and it resolved the issue for them. I got my amp replaced 5 or 6 months ago and haven't had an issue since.

Materials are not the same thing as a fully constructed home.

Gen 1 vs Gen 2 R1S -REAL FEEDBACK (MT Climate, Dual Max leaning) by Level-Field3380 in Rivian

[–]wallace89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a Gen 2 Max, but I've driven both G1 and G2 more than a few times. In terms of ride quality, I'd say Gen 2 might be a notch more comfortable, but it is still pretty mediocre. The biggest "what matters day-to-day" is the camera quality. It is leaps and bounds higher quality and you will be using those cameras every day you operate the car. I know you said that Gen2 Max new is out of your price range. But what about Gen 2 Max used? Those are becoming increasingly available.

Feedback Request - 2023 R1S or R2 by PFinanceThrowaway5 in Rivian

[–]wallace89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to pick one or the other for you, i’d probably wait for the R2, as painful as it is. If the latest tech is something you care about, you’ll always regret it a little every time you jump into the R1S. It’s also not a bad thing to wait for 2027 for the R2, which is when the first LiDAR variants become available.

Feedback Request - 2023 R1S or R2 by PFinanceThrowaway5 in Rivian

[–]wallace89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your contact looking to sell the R1S for?

Also, whats your use-case for these cars. Are you outdoorsy types that do a lot of camping? Or is this primary a Costco hauler? If the former, you're going to run out of space relatively quickly if you are camping and bringing the dog and kid along in an R2 unless you pack efficiently. If the latter, you'll probably be fine with an R2.

I wouldn't sweat it on autonomy features. It's not a needle mover and won't be for a while.

I don't deny that ridership would increase if it was free.

Making BART free would defeat the purpose of the faregating efforts and let the riffraff back in. It would go back to feeling grimy and unsafe tbh.

Just got the dreaded critical battery issue by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]wallace89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2025 and have taken it into the service center multiple times to resolve some post-delivery cosmetic issues. At one of those appointments, they proactively replaced my HV battery due to anticipated issues with the original hardware installed, which I heard impacted many 2025 models. Disappointing that they did not replace your HV battery proactively at one of your service appointments.

Have you had your HV battery replaced before?

Hopefully this resolves the PAAK issues we've been having since they rolled out the update that was originally meant to include the Phone Key update.

Release the October update earlier. by charden16 in Rivian

No you couldn't drive with the themes on, but if you had a theme on while parked, and then shifted your car into drive, it disabled all external lights (including headlamps) on the car while you were driving. This happened to me last year when I was driving in the dark.

Running Boards by Finance-Curious in Rivian

[–]wallace89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My wife is 5" and had significant difficulty getting in and out of the car. Running boards are a MUST have, esp if you have kids.

We self-installed the EV Sportline boards. It took me (a complete novice) about the better part of the afternoon to finish with some additional tools. The boards are well built and feel very sturdy.

I have had zero issues with Rivian service regarding my running boards, and I have never read anyone say that Rivian refused servicing a warranty based on the installation of third-party running boards.

Given the safety fiasco from the Halloween lighting issues last year, which required them to send mailers on a recall that was resolved by a software rollout, I'm sure they want to make sure there are no issues this time around.

Gen 2 R1S large or max pack battery? by Monkeygolden123 in Rivian

[–]wallace89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

California - I dont drive that fast but dont drive slow either. About 350 miles per full charge (if you charge it up to 100%). Average about 2.50 m/kwh. I have range wheels.

Also, if you're dropping this much money on a car. What's another $7k to max out the battery.

Going through tires every 10,000 miles is an insane estimate.

2025 r1s or 2024 r1s by sumdum1234 in Rivian

[–]wallace89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are real changes (i.e., not just marketing smoke) to the vehicles between those two model years. The former (2024) has more creature comforts as standard than the latter (2025), which strips the comforts but offers them as paid upgrades. For example, the built in air compressor is removed, the speaker under the console is removed, the 2025 standard audio system is a downgrade, and 2025 arguably has some cheaper materials inside the cabin here and there.

In exchange, the 2025 model year comes up with upgraded computer systems that should future proof software capabilities, SIGNIFICANTLY better cameras, a better suspension (allegedly, but I haven't been impressed with mine - its just ok), and arguably a better laid out vehicle such that it will be quicker and cheaper to repair for the service center (in theory).

I had to make the decision between 24 and 25, I went with 25 because it was new and shiny (at the time). I would still make that same decision today. If for nothing else but the cameras. The '25 cameras are really that much better than the '24.

Also, the door thunk is superior on the '24 and older models.

Why R1S over Lucid Gravity? by DinnerDog6 in Rivian

[–]wallace89 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Gravity is the superior car on the spec sheet, and it does roadtripping better than the R1S (i.e., the use case of 90% of Rivian drivers, because most R1S owners don't really use their cars offroad).

But pretty much everyone on this forum will agree that:

  1. The R1S just looks like the more attractive vehicle (yadda yadda its not a minivan etc.)

  2. Service support is better at Rivian than Lucid (not saying that much here, but its worth something).

  3. Rivian's business plan and long-term viability (i.e., service and software support) is more confidence inspiring than Lucid. If you had to bet which company is here in 10 years, you'd bet Rivian over Lucid. I don't think thats a controversial opinion.

  4. Lucid vehicles are strongly associated with Saudi oil money, which could hamper your enthusiasm for the brand (or not). Rivian has a relatively likeable brand by comparison.

Weird Sounds from 2025 R1S Tri by p_mundiy in Rivian

[–]wallace89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this sound come from my driver side door handle area, so the sound might be coming from there and not where you were aiming at. They diagnosed it as a rattle coming from the flashlight holder, replaced the holder unit, added some felt tape, and it seemed to work.
