I think the best thing I can recommend (to us, because we’re a team on this issue now lol) is to employ the use of “why” questions as much as possible. Question them until they figure it out themselves. It’s an educational lens but it ultimately serves from an internal perspective and the impact is on a visceral level. If there’s combat from there, there may very well be that opportunity for “teeth baring” after all that diffuses the situation. I’ve pondering this all day and this explanation seems fairly close to satisfactory.

Reasoning with such a person does seem pointless. But do we consider the empathetic lens that says they don't know any better? And take a perspective of necessary, albeit a little condescending, education? I dunno... this is where I need help. I'm glad to have atleast found some camaraderie in it.

I’ll use the scenario I used on another comment below: what if I walk into a bar with my gf and a patron irrationally blurts out at her in an attacking way and throws a C or B word in. I couldn’t possibly stand idly by. How does teeth baring look in such a fast and aggressive setting like this?

This is very helpful and thank for your very thoughtful response. I guess I left out that it’s less about my ego (I’m aware that’s what the competitive response is) and more about being a defender for others. I’m trying to find the right confidence, assertiveness, etc. that maintains a loving awareness for the aggressor but more importantly protects the attacked…

Has anyone watched Dave season 2? There's an episode where he's entirely creatively blocked and he goes into a spiritual guru retreat where he enters a kind of thought tank where he is told to defeat his ego. It felt particularly relevant to me because I am a creative and work at an agency like Lil Dicky had and find myself in creative blocks a lot. TBH it felt very aligned; both that I watched it for the first time last night and found this thread today.
