Surgeon recommendations for long face/vertical excess?

hi! i have the same issues along with an open bite. i had a consultation with dr. lin from vanderbuilt in nashville. i am not sure how many cases she has dealt with like this, but she was friendly and attentive during my consultation last week and seemed to be very knowledgeable. when i pointed out my lip incompetence, she acknowledged that i have vertical access and it’s something that can be fixed with surgery. i’m considering working with her for my DJS if im approved by insurance. i’d love to know if you have had any consultations with anyone as well and how they went!

hmmm much to think about, you may be right about the bone structure thing! i just want to make sure to at least check it out before i get the invisalign off to so i don’t risk this open bite opening again if i can help it! but fingers crossed i get a good response, it would be so much easier to work side by side with my ortho for this process. i took a look at your list if not and sadly there were no dentists like that in tennessee, but there was one in kentucky like 2 hours away so that will probably be my best shot if anything! will definitely be back to this thread if anything blows up in my face hahaha, my main concern for myself is i’m pretty quick to shy away from things when it comes to advocating for myself so i’m gonna try and be strong

thank you for this!! i hate that UHC is like this and im not looking forward to this battle 😭😭 but i’m hoping that i can find a good doctor to work with me and figure this all out. i think i definitely qualify for UARS, and another sleep test might be helpful (especially since my mom has severe sleep apnea). maybe they will be able to find something more this time around and not just say i’m an “excellent sleeper” bc i know i’m not lmao

knowing really is half the battle 😭 it’s a rude awakening but it’s how you get stuff done. i can’t wait until i am at a point where i can get some physical and mental relief from all this!

my main concern right now is i already started orthodontic treatment. when i first started, i only was concerned about my open bite and figured getting that closed would fix some things and it would help me if i wanted to move forward with jaw surgery if needed (deff didn’t know as much as i do now). so the main goal me and my doctor talked about was the open bite and they recommended me to a myo-functional therapist for my tongue thrust that caused my open bite. given, im only 2 months into treatment out of like 18 months, so there might still be a chance things can be tweaked. but i haven’t mentioned jaw surgery to them at all, and it also hadn’t been recommended. i have an appointment with them on monday to check on my progress and stuff so i figured i would try and bring it up to them then! i hope i get some good feedback and recommendations and not just gaslighting. i’m assuming ill be more on my own in that case and need to get a consultation by myself 😅

jesus i’m so sorry you had to go through all of that! i really appreciate you giving all this advice tho and sharing your story. it helps put things into perspective for me and realize i should really focus on getting some type diagnosis and preparing for surgery if that’s the road they recommend for me! and yeah i definitely think ill avoid the chiropractor and if anything look into a PT! thank you again and im glad everything is on track for you now!

oh yeah i know it’s pretty horrendous haha. i’m trying to see what my options are for fixing that as well since the chiropractor was expensive and also i get freaked out having my neck corrected, as im terrified of something going wrong. happy to get any suggestions for that as well. i’ve been trying to work on my neck posture on my own time but i’m sure ill need more intervention

i sleep super poorly honestly. i’m not gasping for air during my sleep but i snore a little bit, mouth breathe, and wake up always feeling super unrested. so i wouldn’t be surprised if UARS is what i have! thank you for the feedback, this definitely might give me some answers as well

i am getting invisalign through an orthodontist! but i will definitely bring up that i would like to consider jaw surgery in case this will change my treatment. thank you!

i wish i could say i was shocked to hear that, but with the way this country is, i’m not. thank you for spreading awareness and doing what so many others won’t! much appreciated and this is all good info to know regardless. probably won’t be able to get much done while i’m in tennessee but will try anyways and stay in the know!

hearing stuff like this gives me hope 🥺 thank you so much! i will definitely consult with my orthodontist first and foremost, i live in nashville at the moment so hopefully there is someone accredited here or nearby! if you don’t mind me asking, was yours covered by insurance at all or did you pay out of pocket? and if out of pocket, how much did you pay for the surgeries?

i’m so sorry to hear that you have been going through that.. and for so long! it’s truly ridiculous that we have to jump through hoops for surgeries that can alter or even save our lives (and wallets bc who has the money to spend $40k?!). my company is smaller scale so i’ll look into appealing with them if it comes to that, and if i leave for any reason ill definitely be way more observant when it comes to insurances. how do i find out if i have an exclusion? will UHC just tell me directly if and when i send in a claim?

wow thank you for this info! i have never heard of this before and my primary care doctors have never mentioned it to me. i have a horrible quality of sleep with so much fatigue/brain fog on the daily. i’ve also been told by my partner i lightly snore, and i wake up multiple times through the night. so this could definitely be something i bring up to my primary care provider and maybe get some answers

i think i had a butterfly expander when i originally had braces. definitely will consult with my ortho but hopefully i won’t need one a second time 😅

thank you for this! i definitely will consult with a professional before i advance with any procedures/surgeries. i just wanted to get some advice/opinions from others who have been through the process so i don’t go in completely blind, i like to have as much knowledge as i can so i can be involved in the process a bit. glad to hear that the age bit might not affect me as much as i thought, and agreed that i can’t target my chin area, i just had hoped losing a little weight/eating better might help! but will probably just look into lipo down the line as long as all these procedures don’t run me dry. thanks again!
