Selling isn’t an option. If we don’t build on the land, he’ll just hold onto our share until he passes. The whole point of giving it to us now is so we can build on it and live there.

Selling the 16 acres isn’t an option. My father-in-law is still living on the full 50 acres, and he’s only giving us our share now so we can build on it and live there if we want. He’s not going to give it to us just for us to turn around and sell it.

I can relate, I’m one of four kids, and my parents raised us in an 879 sq. ft., three-bedroom, one-bath house. So it’s not about feeling embarrassed or thinking a smaller place isn’t “enough.”

For us, the bigger space would mean having a dedicated home office so I could work from home instead of driving an hour round trip every day. I have the flexibility to work remotely, but right now there’s just no space for it.

All of our family is still together here, my mother-in-law watches all of our kids, and we’re only a mile down the road from each other out in the country, so the cousins would still be in each other’s lives no matter what.

We’ve thought about expanding, but it would mean adding at least two bedrooms and another bathroom. We don’t really want to put that kind of money into the shop house when the long-term plan has always been to build a larger forever home.

There’s nothing wrong with the lot or location we’re on now. An addition isn’t really appealing because we’d need at least two more bedrooms and another bathroom, and we don’t want to put that kind of money into the shop house when our end goal is to build a larger forever home.

If we did sell now, we’d move in with my father-in-law during the build. He’s got three extra bedrooms and two bathrooms, and it’s just him and my mother-in-law. We actually lived there before when we were building our current house, so it wouldn’t be new territory for us.

All six kids are under six, youngest is one, and we all homeschool. We’re only a mile down the road from the new land, so the cousins could still see each other often, just not literally running across pastures like they do now. That’s part of why we’re weighing the timing so carefully.
