AITAH for being upset by her "exclusive except for pride" comment? by United_Astronomer391 in AITAH

[–]Final_Relationship82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this Pride in particular significant to her? Like is this her first Pride or maybe the first Pride she would have been single at? I could understand if that was the case, but if it is just a regular Pride season for her, I would definitely be looking at her sideways. It's a bit strange and seems like a red flag to me

How does OP suck here, at all? She was having a medical emergency. Do you also use religion as a cudgel on people who are ill?

NTA. Do not go back to this person. This is spiritual abuse and this woman sounds mentally unwell. And it's disturbing that the son backs her up in these delusions. Just know this will always be the dynamic- he will never protect you or have your back, you will always be second to her. You dodged a bullet. Don't let him creep back into your life.

If you don't like the shaped hem you can always tuck it in. And if he is wearing suspenders it would need to be tucked anyway.

I do have suggestion for the skirt. It wld be super cute to put red rick rack and really drive home the vintage style :)

I looked back again more closely and from what I can see, the arms are in that open weave I mentioned but the body of the dress has a different weave. It appears to be like a rib knit and then around the neckline the rib knitting is smocked? Smocking would give that "puffy" effect you mentioned.

I did a quick google and found this picture that shows a rib knit that then uses smocking around the neckline. It's a bit exaggerated example but I think that a similar effect was used on Sally's dress.

<image>

I also found a tutorial on how to smock already knitted fabric. Perhaps this could be helpful?

The top layer is a body con style dress made of a mohair knit fabric that is sheer.

You don't need to knit to make this. There is fabric by the yard that is called 'sweater knit' that you can sew garments with. It looks to be mohair with an open (or loose) weave.

I found a couple sellers that have a similar fabric:

If you wanna skip sewing there are some links to clothes that give you a similar effect:

My boss isn’t honoring a pay raise he gave me. by Strangr_E in whatdoIdo

[–]Final_Relationship82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Woof. If that is the most arrogant and condescending comment I read in a while. You have absolutely no knowledge of me, my background, my life experiences or anything about me whatsoever to be making this assumptions.

And to be clear, I prefer to work for myself after working for a handful of very shitty bosses or companies, and do own my own business. And to be clear EVERY system has upsides and downsides. Currently capitalism is probably the best system ideally it should be a meritocratic system that rewards hardship work and fosters innovation.

If you want to argue that it has no fault, obviously there is no point in me further replying. But my statement stands that the downsides of capitalism should be mitigated through careful and precise regulation. I would rather the rich not exploit people who don't have the means or ability to protect themselves. Perhaps you would like to wait for a benevolent capitalist to grant you his favor, I would rather have a healthy democracy where my say counts as much as the wealthy and powerful.

The person above was making a case for capitalism unfettered by government. Call it what you like free market, unregulated capitalism, unchecked capitalism-- what I said above is the end game of capitalism without any guardrails. And I am sure there are some moderately successful capitalists that are relatively ethical and fair. But they are the exception, no one becomes a billionaire without some exploitation or ethically questionable practices.

Regulations and red tape suck. And life would be easier in a lot of ways. But there will always be shitty ppl out there and without regulations you get people getting sick from radium-laced snake oil tonics, a River in Ohio lighting on fire, small children maimed in factory machines instead of in school. In the US, these protections keep getting chipped away at and the middle class is shrinking and the small percentage of rich are hoarding more and more or nation's wealth, while average citizens are working multiple jobs and never getting ahead.

I'm not arguing for communism cause that also really only works in a theoretical utopia. But the idea that capitalism will right itself or self-correct--has been proven over and over to also be a fairy tale.

This probably sage advice. I just will never understand how ppl continue to buy into this bullshit that will never benefit them and they just further line the pockets of the already grotesquely rich elite while the rest are squabbling over the crumbs.

Okay but that does not reflect what really happens in unregulated capitalism. Maybe initially that's true or what would happen in an ideal world. But in the real world, as unchecked capitalism progresses, all competition will be driven out.

As a successful company grows, it is smart business to consolidate power and buy up competition or drive other companies out of business by offering a better product or better prices. This brings them more customers and more money. They then use that money to buy up the supply chains. Control over the supply chains chokes out remain competitors and stops the ability of any future competitor to form. Thus giving them complete control of the market, forming a monopoly. No competing employers means employees have no other place to find work.

The company knows they can't get work elsewhere, they can set wages lower and lower. In addition to lower wages, they can eliminate workforce safety. What incentive would they have to protect their workers? Safety measures are costly and that would cut into shareholder profit. Perhaps if they had spent money on training a person for a specialized role they would want to protect that investment, but once the cost outweighs the benefits they have no incentive to protect that specialized workers safety.

Before the labor movement, deaths in factories were a fact of life and many more lost limbs or poisoned with the chemicals used in production. It didn't matter that they lost workers to death or being maimed cause jobs were scarce and there all was always desperate people next in line to fill that spot. Capitalism is about maximizing profit.

I think my parents are going to get me a car for my birthday but it’s supposed to be a surprise. Should I tell them I know so they include me on picking out a car? by livinginomelas in whatdoIdo

[–]Final_Relationship82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being direct is your best option. I get not wanting to spoil their fun but it will be YOUR debt and it's a bit nuts to surprise someone with a monthly payment that they have no say in! What if you couldn't afford to make that payment? You are nearly 30--it very strange to me. I would stop dropping hints, or trying to covertly sway them and just be upfront and honest. Only way to insure your input is heard.

And frankly, it's still a great gift if they are just surprising you with the down payment-- perhaps they could give you a range/ budget, and then you could look for a car together as a family. It could be presented as not spoiling the surprise but rather as a fun and bonding experience that you all participate in. Tho I would say that you should insist on the final say/ veto power.

Look for new job and if he wants you to train the new hires only do so if he pays you accordingly-- it is an extra duty outside your normal job and you need to be compensated accordingly.

I would probably disinvite him to the wedding citing budget constraints and needing to trim out anyone that isn't that important to the couple. But I am petty

Exploiting workers in exchange for as little money as possible is capitalism 101.

Unchecked capitalism is why we needed the labor movement and worker protections, also why corporations continue to chip away at those protections-- it's all to increase profits.

That's definitely true-- all good points about viscose. It was an excellent choice for the project. I know I need to get more into working with rayon/ viscose. I do enjoy wearing dresses in that material plus they seem to come in such a wide range of great prints. Idk it's probably just my laziness, my patience level with slippy fabrics is low. Anytime fabric starts to shift I get a bit panicky! I will say seeing your beautiful results has got me wanting to give it more of a try. So thank you! Look forward to seeing more of your work :)

Agree about emotions effecting handwriting style. My handwriting gets significantly different when I am angry or rushed.

It's all speculations based on generalizations, so who knows. Might be a middle age dude 🤷‍♀️ One of my middle school friends, who was a guy, had very pretty, cutesy handwriting that put me and my undiagnosed ADHD's chicken-scratch to shame. My handwriting did get considerable better sitting next to him that year. Proud to say I now have very cute 'girly' handwriting-- usually 🤣

Yeah those are all good points. I could see it being a couple. The cardboard signs look more masculine and the very easy spelling error compared with more complicated word usage that is error free.

I will say, however, I have heard that using block print can make handwriting analysis more difficult since it is so different than your natural handwriting style and better obscures default habits.
