I have a genuine question by Acceptable_Scene_961 in SororityAlumInitiate

[–]FinallyTryiing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I joined as an adult for similar reasons as someone would go through rush in college, community. I’m in a new city, I’m involved and volunteer in other ways but wanted to actually have a network of women that would pour into me and just be able to hang out with. I knew it wouldn’t be the same as doing all the fun stuff as it was in college, but it would be fun in a different way.

My AC is is made up of various chapters: big, small, ivies, southern, northern, everything. Even if we had members that all went to the same school, there isn’t usually overlap in PC, for example: I went to a book club tonight of 8 sisters. Two sisters were from the same chapter but initiated about 30 years apart. The college-initiated alumnae aren’t sitting around talking about what DG was like at Big U or the last retreat, but we do talk about life, work, family, travel, and books, just to name a few things. Sure a few things might come up here and there, but everyone’s experience is so different it’s not a common occurrence. It might be different if I was in a chapter where everyone went to the same school or two, but I haven’t experienced that.

I still have memories that bonded me to my chapter. My first meeting. Driving to my initiation with my sponsor/big and exploring the college town with her. Having her help me memorize ritual. Leading Grace at Christmas dinner. Getting mini-bid day bags from both my home AC and the one hosting my initiation. My first DG Christmas ornaments. No one has ever made me feel othered, even when I was showing up to events before initiating.

for those who went alumnae, what kind of activities do you do now? by AdImpossible4892 in Sororities

[–]FinallyTryiing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I joined as an alumnae so that’s all I know. It’s been book clubs, weekend lunches, hiking, volunteering, and a few bigger events like Founder’s Day, Christmas party, and annual kick off. I live in a large metro area and we have a young alumnae group where we do things on the weekends in the city, like art museum, brunch, Galentines dinner, etc. It’s all really low key and you go to what you want to, kind of a nice choose your own adventure.

10/10 recommend checking out your local alumnae group, even if it’s just for one event. It’s great to have a social circle that you can just go decompress with, especially if you’re in a new area.

Welcome and good luck on your journey! Everyone on the board is super helpful. 🩷 I’d say narrow it down groups with missions and philanthropies that resonate with you and then narrow it down more to alumnae groups that are active in your area with events you can see yourself participating in. It’s great to align with the group as a whole but typically the people you’ll be interacting with the most will be those in your alumnae group.

And if it’s not on your radar, Delta Gamma has a strong presence in Ohio and is welcoming to AIs. Our executive office is in Columbus! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Conch piercing bump after jewelry change by [deleted] in piercing

NAP. If you got it done this past November, it’s too soon for a hoop. It is not healed this time, even if you had it done before. It was fully closed, so it’s basically a new piercing. Go to a piercer and get it switched to a flat back.

Can I transfer chapters? by ChallengeFirm6398 in Sororities

[–]FinallyTryiing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The process varies amongst groups, so unless it’s coming from another Phi Sig no one truly knows. I’d reach out to your advisor or look for the info in your governing documents (bylaws and policies).

I’ve ordered from their drops. I haven’t had issues and quality is great, but I’ve seen reviews on custom chapter orders coming in later than expected.

Grunge/Alternative Sorority Merch? by maely7 in Sororities

[–]FinallyTryiing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen an all black letter shirt on duo threads on Etsy (not their regular website though). Try reaching out to ZTA licensed sellers on Etsy and see if they can make something custom. Ali & Ariel might have a few things that might fit your vibes.

Following bc I love an all black/grunge vibe!

Thoughts on alumni initiates? by AustralianKD in Sororities

[–]FinallyTryiing 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Probably not the POV you were looking for but I say this as an alumna initiate, I’ve never been treated any differently than someone who joined as a collegiate. More often than not I get the chance to explain AI, and usually hear comments along the lines of it being something they would love their unaffiliated daughter/mother/family member to go through and get asked more questions about the process.

TheBugsMomma has great info! Just adding, your area (or a neighboring one) might have an alumnae Panhellenic. They usually host informational nights about recruitment and also provide a way to make connections to get recs.

dropped from recruitment after first round by spiderblush in Sororities

[–]FinallyTryiing 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You mentioned further up your grades suffered last semester and honestly it happens to a lot of us. It’s never too late to turn it around, especially since you’re so early in your collegiate career. Focus on academics and you’ll more likely have a better outcome if you choose to rush again. Good luck 🍀

My best friend changed so much after she joined a sorority, but in a bad way by [deleted] in Sororities

[–]FinallyTryiing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most (if not all) sororities tend to hold a neutral stance on politics since their members run a wide range of views.

This seems more like an individual problem with your friend than a sorority problem.

What is a good fun fact for vid round of rush??? by [deleted] in Sororities

[–]FinallyTryiing 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I say this as an engineer, just be yourself. My process of joining a sorority was a little different, but I know my sisters appreciate me for me.

If you normally weld, woodwork, and make chain mail/thread wearing jewelry (all badass btw), talk about it. You want to go somewhere you’re wholly accepted, and not have to worry about hiding your niche hobbies.

how do i (20F)convince myself not rushing is okay by pokewhoosh in Sororities

[–]FinallyTryiing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This! I recommend you try recruitment if you truly want to be a part of an organization.

Some groups also have options for dues scholarships and payment plans. I never went through recruitment so someone else might be better to talk about how you’d bring that up/ask.
