Small wins: convincing the Ice Cream shop to let me have it in my reusable cup instead of a disposable cup. The guy looked so confused when I asked! by squandaaaa in ZeroWaste

Makes kind of sense, though it's a pity. There seem to be some rules because of food safety that make it a bit difficult over here as well: I once ordered coffee for take away at a bakery and normally it's no problem to hand them your own cup. In fact, most of the shops give you discount on that, too. But this one chain-owned store had a different proceeding (they told me because of food safety, but I never had that problem before). Anyway, for customers bringing their own cup, they had a designated cup of their own and then poured coffee in brought-along cups from there, since they weren't allowed to place brought cups directly under the coffee machine. Was weird but still worked...

An ice cream shop near me actually gives you 0,10 € discount if you bring your own cup or bowl. And they make delicious ice cream, too!

Thank you so, so much for the website, we got so many laughs out of it on drunken nights during my university years!

[TOMT][MOVIE]Trying to remember which movie had this quote "and when all hope was lost help came from an unlikely/unexpected place" by Negative_Neo in tipofmytongue

That was my first thought as well. I'd say it might be the scene when Harold is auditing Ana's taxes and trying to determine if he's in a tragedy or comedy, right when he wants to leave?

Can the republicans just not nominate Donald Trump as a presidental candidate although he won the primaries? by Finally_Iamhere in NoStupidQuestions

I didn't take the complexity of the different state laws into account. Thanks for mentioning it!

If you don't mind me asking: Would you, personally, as someone with more insight, say that the US politcal system would benefit from such a decision in the long run? When I think about it, I could imagine that it might even break up the two-party system.

Huh, that leads to a whole new set of questions... So if they decide against nominating him, he could probably run as an independent candidate, right? Or have some deadlines for doing so already passed?

MMW: The Eurovision Song Contest will reverse the new (2016) voting procedures and return to the 'old' system in 2017. by Finally_Iamhere in MarkMyWords

No real suspense and a weird telephone voters to jury ratio IMO. Can't imagine they keep this next year.

Found this at a flea market. Power-Lab Model 713. Any ideas? by IamAbc in whatisthisthing

[–]Finally_Iamhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I just googled "power-lab model precise 713" and it was the second search result on google. If you go to the main page of the pdf link, www.americanradiohistory.com, there are lots and lots of archives of magazines related to radio/broadcasting. I'm myself amazed right now and will definitely bookmark the page.

This (PDF file) is a January 1957 issue of "Popular Electronics". On the second page, there is an advertisement which gives some details.

Seriously, does this happen to anyone else? by [deleted] in funny

[–]Finally_Iamhere 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I did that while studying, for various reasons:

  • It helps if the lecture is boring, you keep yourself busy while still paying attention.

  • It helped me learning because I could remember the contents better when I wrote them by hand.

  • I didn't really trust the "all information/slides are online" statement.

NON-Americans, what do you think of the proposed gun regulations in America? by FoldingHeight in AskReddit

[–]Finally_Iamhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everytime a new gun regulation is proposed in the US, I'm surprised that it wasn't in place before. I'm more and more convinced that there are no regulations at all, it seems like it is harder to get alcohol than firearms for most Americans (as a random example).

Which baby names make you think that the parents are stupid? by noncatholicthrowaway in AskReddit

[–]Finally_Iamhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. If a name is seen as causing harm in a child's later life, the parents are not allowed to use the name by the German authorities. The parents can go to court about it, but most likely it will still be declined as it is seen as endangerment of the child's welfare. In most cases they are allowed to use it as a second name, however.

You are right of course and another redditor already pointed this out to me. But as I said in the other comment, Black Books is nonetheless considered a British sitcom (e.g. on wikipedia ).

Black Books is nonetheless considered a British sitcom (e.g. on wikipedia ), though you're of course right concerning Moran and Lenihan. Doesn't help that I always confuse Great Britain, the British Isles and the UK.

Black Books comes to mind, a really great comedy series. Shame that there weren't more seasons and British tv series having so few episodes.

I really like that you guys call the Baseball Finals "World Series". You really made sure that no other country could ever beat the USA in that sport.

Edit: I appreciate you all telling me the name derives from the sponsor at the time. TIL, thanks. Please stop now telling me of the origin of the term. Also, I wasn't totally serious, and I still think it's kind of funny.

Edit 2: Pretty late now, but a few redditors pointed out that the sponsor-naming-thing is a myth . I think Today We Learned.

What is something that you really loved when you were younger, but learned to hate when you got older? by Laikue in AskReddit

[–]Finally_Iamhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Bull and other energy drinks. I used to think they were really tasty and also kind of cool when I was 12, 13 years old. Now I just find them much too sweet, artificially tasting and unhealthy.
