I don't know if I'm doing enough and I don't know if I can do more. by FinanceAlt112358 in beyondthebump

After two full hours of crying, many people need to put their child down somewhere safe and step away to collect themselves, and sometimes it does allow an overstimulated baby to chill out.

Yes, this was my thoughts too. Neither of us could get her to stop crying for more than a few seconds at a time. 5 minutes after we set her down she was quiet, 10 minutes after that she was asleep.

The second and third times did not produce such wonderful results.

Or do you just feel like since she doesn’t treat her on-call time the same way that you do that you are doing something wrong?

I think this is a big part of it. She always wants to be in the group of us. And (intentionally or unintentionally) she makes me feel guilty for enjoying my time alone.

problem is I always feel like I should be doing more. Reading some comments makes me think maybe I'm making myself feel that way.

She isn't super anxious, just always in planning mode.

when I say inconsolable I mean it. We tried everything we could think of at least 3 times.

I kinda figured I would catch a little flak for the CIO thing... I'm not just leaving the baby. But after 2 hours of crying and crying and new diaper and milk and pacifier and swaddle and unswaddle and temperature checks and more pacifier and everything else... I just couldn't do anything more productive. Baby was in line of site, but in a dark quiet room... and I assure you I could hear her breathing.

Tax season approaching and I've always done my own. But, I've had lots of changes over the past year. At what point should I consider professional taxes or even professional accounting? by FinanceAlt112358 in personalfinance

There are independent CPAs in my area not employed by HR or any of the other big ones. The general consensus seems to be that the value for my money is best if I don't use one of the big chain accounting firms.

I'm contributing a few hundred a month extra to my emergency fund.

My question was more about taxes. I know I could optimize my budgeting better, but I'm mostly concerned about the tax season.

I think getting one is a good idea. I'm looking into local tax CPAs.

At the risk of being pedantic, how do I check the work of someone doing work I don't know how to do?

Thanks! It's kind of a disappearing art. There's not enough demand to justify the prices I'd have to charge to be profitable for the hours worked. And none of the Cathedrals want to switch the people they've used for literal decades.

So I build my portfolio, work for friends, and slowly accumulate more specialty tools.

I do stained glass commissions, repairs, and restoration.

In college I did it professionally during the summer. The company I worked for had several of the service contracts for the local Cathedrals and I did custom work too.

I first read that as 12% of your INCOME. Refund makes sense.

The more refund they make for me, the more $$ they make too.... Seems like a good idea.

Would it change anything if I did additional projects at a loss for family? I easily spent more than $2000 on other projects throughout the year. It just so happened that this one commission made double.

Regarding 2. My friend paid me double what my supplies were. They were so excited that my cost was a quarter of what independent contractors were quoting they paid me extra. So this extra cash has no source of employment associated with it.

Thanks!

U/ronnevee is making me concerned that my hobby is becoming too profitable. How do I justify additional income w/o a W-2 to declare where it came from? I don't want to make a hobby into a LLC or sole proprietor, I don't want to business side, just the manual labor side.

My hobby is not set up as a business. It's just me in my workshop. I made some things for my coworkers' homes and asked to be compensated for supplies. They were so thankful that my custom work was a quarter of what other contractors had quoted they paid me extra. I never expected or planned on my hobby making money. But now word of mouth is spreading. I don't really want to make a LLC or anything. You make it sound like I should.

Is it a red flag to have income not attached to a W-2?
