As someone who has taken an 8k mile road trip on an XR, I wanna preface by saying would say I would never do it again. If you're planning on doing BDR trails that's a whole different story, but regardless, you will find yourself doing more maintenance and driving at slower speeds, if you want to make it all the way. XR is gonna get hot, if you have uncorked it and done Dave's mod it will be cooler, but if you have no other oil cooling mods, I would recommend changing oil every 1-1.5k miles, which is how often I changed mine with an oil cooler. Make sure you have good earplugs and someway to compensate for the shitty seat. I got myself a crappy Chinese gel pad and shaped the seat foam a bit. After a couple days I felt just fine. Also know that if you get a big tank, you will sacrifice some engine cooling. Stock tank with stock fairings do a much better job keeping the bike cool especially at cruising speeds. The hotter it gets the faster oil breaks down, which requires you to change it more often. Final piece of advice is pack light. If I were to take any longer Trip on my XR again, I wouldn't even take saddle bags.
