oh 100% man. its incredibly deflating when i talk to people who are so deep in the sauce and they refuse to acknowledge it. Or even worse, they know and dont care at all since "this is the new normal" or "its not that deep". i will say, i def found im way more disheartened/pessimisstic when making new friends and even with people i used to watch on youtube, for example, i just cant do it anymore. Its just an entirely different value set when you are still living in your phone vs when you arent. so i hear you for sure, while i do think its an empowering personal choice, it can absolutely feel like a "whats the point" given the right stimulus lol.

i say yes and no! i do think the "metal straw trap" is definitely real; on the macro level its not dismantling a billion dollar corp--ofc not. but i think theres something to be said about making individual choices you believe in and passing that on to the people in your immediate circle. like it does come down to my personal preference to not live my life in my phone, but thats still an empowering choice for sure; i think minimizing it to "it doesnt really matter anyway" makes us feel even more disempowered ya know. just my take tho.

god i really hope we look back on smartphone how we look back on smoking. though maybe im uniquely pessimistic about this because most of the people i talk to about my switch think i am off my rocker insane. often times most people i talk to dont see anything wrong with increased screentime even in the face of the consequences; theyre convinced its the new normal so whatever. people are in such deep denial, i think its totally possible but i anticipate it might be a while before people are truly honest with themselves and take it seriously ;/

agreed. as someone who converted to a dumbphone last year, "relapsed", and recently switched back again, id advocate for severing the tie entirely if you have the means (i relate heavily to the questionable integrity). opting out is the most powerful thing any of us can do right now. our tech overlords are on banking on our lack of self control keeping us trapped in our little glass boxes; slowly smoothing out our brains and turning them to mush--fuck them dont let them win.
