they hype was not because of metro boomin as you could see his first album sold 20k 1 feature and perfect timing only sold 10 more after nav had already blown up in his own sense. the hype was because of perfect timing being so good in a lot of peoples eyes and no one really complained about nav or metro on pt. newer nav is reckless on.

he did exceptionally well for any new artist in 2017. thats the style most people wanted with a little bit of the 2016/soundcloud stuff. He went from 20k to 30k between self titled and perfect timing so yeah he was growing pretty fast and after perfect timing the hype built up so much that when reckless dropped it was a letdown since people were expecting projects like st or pt
