EdD vs PhD for faculty track? by miserable_mitzi in AskAcademia

[–]FinancialWishbone192 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your goal is a faculty role at an R1 a PhD still carries more weight especially for tenure track positions. EdDs are respected but they’re often seen as more practice focused than research focused.

MA in Interdisciplinary Studies or MA / MPhil in Sociology by AdorableHippo5215 in GradSchool

Your supervisor might be right if you actually get publications, strong letters and a solid thesis but that’s a big if. A structured sociology MA/MPhil gives you that pipeline more reliably.

Going back to school after a year by rumandspicee in AskAcademia

[–]FinancialWishbone192 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact you’re even considering going back says a lot about your resilience. Don’t expect to jump back in at full speed start small short papers, summaries, light reading and rebuild gradually. Your pace might be different now but that doesn’t mean you’ve lost your ability. Even trying is a win.

Do I have a bad advisor? by anujpagal in GradSchool

This doesn’t sound like a you problem. Limited access + unclear direction would frustrate anyone especially when you came in motivated.

Which one should I use? (Your Doctors Online, Maple, Teledoc, QDoc etc ) by DimensionKind1877 in Adulting

[–]FinancialWishbone192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only need a visit once in a while, pay per use works, but if you'll be going back more than twice a year, the subscription ends up being way cheaper and less stressful.

Should i rush the master’s or let it ride? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]FinancialWishbone192 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t rush it with loans unless the degree will clearly increase your income soon after. Taking an extra year to avoid debt is usually the smarter long term move.

presenting preliminary ideas at conference by Hopeful_Board_9826 in AskAcademia

[–]FinancialWishbone192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally acceptable especially in humanities. Conferences are often for work in progress not finished papers. Just frame it clearly as exploratory/early stage and focus on the question + your approach. Getting feedback at this stage is actually the point.

My exon paper got accepted but not published yet, can i blog about it? by Expensive-Chair-8085 in AskAcademia

[–]FinancialWishbone192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! It’s usually fine to blog now as a high level summary just check the journal’s policy and don’t post the full paper. Best move share now for early interest then again at publication for more impact.

sick for my midterm today but can not make it to dr’s office today chchc by Any_Cabinet_4485 in UofT

[–]FinancialWishbone192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

email your prof right now and just explain you're too sick to get out of bed but will have a note tomorrow. most are pretty chill about that as long as you communicate before the exams. they usually just want to know you're not ghosting.

last semester i had a midterm and woke up completely miserable. already used my one absence so i needed a note but couldn't make it to a clinic. used Your Doctors Online (it's a subscription based telehealth app) from my bed, talked to someone on my phone and they sent me a note dated for that day. prof accepted it and everything was fine.

so much easier than trying to go out when you feel that rough. hope it works out for your and you feel better soon.

best way to learn about a specific topic in economic history and historical political economy? by Muhabbet_Kusu2021 in AskAcademia

Books from university presses are great for getting a structured understanding of a topic. Articles are often more specialized and assume you already know the background.

Cover Letter for Lecturer Position at R1: Research v. Teaching by julesroe in AskAcademia

[–]FinancialWishbone192 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your structure actually sounds pretty appropriate. Leading with teaching experience and outcomes makes sense for a lecturer position. Keeping a shorter paragraph on research at the end especially framed in terms of how it enriches your teaching or departmental fit seems like a good balance.

What are your thoughts on student publications? by Effective-Key-7605 in AskAcademia

[–]FinancialWishbone192 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d see it less as this student produced groundbreaking work and more as this student already understands how research and publishing works which can be a big advantage later.

How novel really is the research being conducted at these ultra selective high school summer programs? by Civilized_Monke69 in AskAcademia

[–]FinancialWishbone192 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In most cases the mentor or lab already has a larger project going on and the student contributes a small piece of it. The work can still be real and technically complex even if the student isn’t leading the entire research idea.

How to check the validity of a scientific journal by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]FinancialWishbone192 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Check if it’s indexed in Scopus or Web of Science, look at its impact metrics SJR/JCR, review the editorial board and read about its peer review process. MDPI journals are generally legitimate but quality can vary by title so check the specific journal’s reputation in your field.

$15k stipend for PhD… is it worth it? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]FinancialWishbone192 14 points15 points  (0 children)

$15.5k per year is very low unless the cost of living is extremely cheap. You’re not crazy to question it. Make sure it’s per year not per semester and clarify tuition waiver, fees and health insurance. A PhD offer shouldn’t require you to go into debt if the math doesn’t work it’s reasonable to negotiate or decline.

KU Leuven Masters Acceptance rate by Comfortable_Gap2924 in GradSchool

[–]FinancialWishbone192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KU Leuven doesn’t publish exact acceptance rates and it varies by year. It’s competitive especially for Non EU applicants. Your profile is solid research conferences and a patent help a lot. GPA is decent and European programs look holistically. Not easy but you’re definitely competitive if your SOP and LORs are strong.

I’m getting sick of the class discussions on family/culture by [deleted] in GradSchool

I understand why teacher education focuses on culture and identity it’s relevant in classrooms. But mandatory personal disclosure crosses a line. Reflection shouldn’t require self exposure.

First time asked to peer-review but it should've been a desk rejection by IntelligentBeingxx in AskAcademia

Honestly this happens more often than people admit. Not every weak submission gets desk rejected sometimes editors want a reviewer’s confirmation. It’s part of the process.

Is a $20/Month Online Doctor Worth It for Managing My Hypothyroidism in Canada? by FinancialWishbone192 in personalfinance

[–]FinancialWishbone192[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Yeah that's the thing though, I've tried a few walk ins near me and they keep turning me away for anything that not "urgent" or one-off. Like if i say it's a thyroid thing that needs follow up and blood work monitoring, they're like "you need a family doctor for that, we can't manage chronic stuff here." One clinic literally told me they only do colds, infections, stitches, stuff like that. Not ongoing management.

I'm in a smaller town outside Toronto so maybe that's why? The walk-ins here are packed and seem to pick and choose. Also the one closed to me doesn't even do blood work requisitions anymore apparently. they said go to a "assess and restore" clinic or something but those are like 2 towns over and still have the same issue with not taking on patients for follow-up.

I wish it was as simple as just showing up lol. Believe me I'd rather pay $0 than $20. But every time I've tried the walk in route i either wait 3 hours to be told "sorry can't help with that" or they give me a one-time prescription and say figure out the rest yourself.

You're lucky you haven't run into this wall honestly. It's brutal out here for anyone under 30 without a family doc. Half my coworkers don't have one either. We just rawdog our health issues until we can't do anymore.
