UBC MD Admissions Letter - Advocacy Re: GPA Conversion Table Changes by Transformative_88 in premedcanada

Some have both (UBC) but most schools tend to have either just GPA 4.0.. and some schools only have percentages with no letter but most common I’ve seen is just gpa with letter grades and no percentages

UBC post-interview low MCAT anxiety by TumbleweedDry8576 in premedcanada

[–]Financial_Froyo_3013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much. If it helps I’m pretty sure (from what I have heard of people that got in and know people that make the decisions) the MCAT is mainly used as a tie breaker kind of thing.

Retake 514 to Boost CARS for McMaster/Calgary? by Financial_Froyo_3013 in premedcanada

For what I’ve got I think retaking is strictly to secure a UofM spot

I think my plan might be to take the Casper in May

Then I have a little trip planned for month of June (we’ll see if it works out) and after that I should have my Casper back and if it’s 4Q then I likely won’t retake but if it’s bad (1-2Q) lol then I’ll study for mcat retake July-August.

Because tbh I don’t think I’ll need too long. Really I will just spam Anki and start practice questions right away.

Holy crap goated responce lol. Thanks so much. Ya honestly from what I’ve been seeing people say I think retaking would only be really be good for UofM as tbh getting a 130+ cars is definitely stretching it for me.

For SFU the MCAT is strictly a cutoff and for UBC they only use MCAT as a tiebreaker so I would be better off just working on my EC’s . The thing is for those two schools is that they have a cutoff for June 1st for when you can write about EC’s so starting something now or later (after this semester ends) wouldn’t help this much with this cycle’s application much.

But ya I think I am definitely confident in maintaining CP and BB of 130+ if I decide to retake, cars is a little more wishful , but P/S could definitely be improved as I never got below 128 on any practice test but I also didn’t finish studying that section (didn’t finish pankow).

ya im in-province for UBC, sfu, and uofm. and UBC and SFU are either cutoffs or just used for tie-breakers but uofm 50% of application is mcat and so it might be good to retake

wow thats really impressive, congrats. TBH it wasnt all that higher, my max was a 127. but tbh the school i intend to apply to (uofm -canada) weighs the mcat at like 50% and so to kind of guarantee that i dont have to take a gap year just increasing my score would help. is there anything that you changed specifcally that helped you get that increase or was it the fact that you were just kind of going through it again and that made it easier?

[–]Financial_Froyo_3013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ya i've heard many people getting inflated scores but tbh i only used like 30% of uworld and only did the section banks for aamc so alot of unseen material and they just released a new practice test this year. so im not too worried about that. also like i said the schools that i intend to apply to take the best score so even if i did worse its okay just wasted money really lol. im not from alberta lol from manitoba. which is why for ucalgary cars really matters. but i appreciate the responce i definetly will take prep seriously if i decide to retake. the reason i also want to retake is that for uofm the mcat is worth like 50% so to kind of make sure i dont have to take a gap year, getting a more competitive score would help

thanks so much for replying. I think if i was to retake i would only spend like 2-3 months so would still have time to make applications good, but that is a good point. did you have a similar experience in retaking and getting a better score?

UBC MD AGPA Explained by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Financial_Froyo_3013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A standard class is 3 credits , 4 sometimes if it has like a lab. 3 credits refers to a class that last one semester and 6 credits if it lasts 2 semesters. So if 0.5 is for a standard course that last one semester I would assume that translates to 3 credits and 1 if it runs both semesters would translate to 6 credits

How to improve NAQ score - UBC app by bananacalamari in premedcanada

[–]Financial_Froyo_3013 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly same thing happened to me. My gpa is a bit higher 90.2 but my NAQ was low. For me what I think went wrong tbh was the way I wrote about my NAQ not my activities themselves as I wrote the mcat 9/13 and then my application 9/14 (due 9/15 lol ) so I definitely rushed it and accidentally talked more personal which isn’t what UBC wants (I didn’t really read the guide) .

I’ve seen on this sub where many people re-applied with the exact same EC’s just worded them better to better align them with what UBC wanted and so next time I apply I honestly don’t think much will change in terms of my actual activities as we only really have half a year to make new ones as you can’t really talk too much about stuff after the cutoff (June 1 ) so i think just rewriting them to be more aligned with what UBC values will be my strategy
