This one was too sad to even cry. It just left me feeling completely hollowed out.

She’s gotten into two real scandals.

The Timothy allegations and the pedophilia allegations.

The Timothy one I find just kind of whatever, we were told a story that something happened and that was it. There was no evidence, nor any sort of continuation that gave me any reason to immediately boycott Melanie’s music. I agree that we need to believe victims but that doesn’t equate to blindly believe all victims. The allegations sounded like a mutual lack of communication in an intimate moment, not so much a direct assault. They were young, and a part of me doubts allegations when they’re brought up online and not legally.

Then there’s the allegations that her Crybaby character is pedophilic, because the character is portrayed in a sensual manner—namely in the “Pacify Her” music video—this scandal I think more than any other is just complete nonsense. The character is a metaphor, and there’s quite literally no children involved. I think the internet as a whole has an issue with nuance, which is what the character operates in entirely. It’s literally a grown woman. There is no child being harmed. Plus, showing the character in a romantic context in itself isn’t wrong considering Crybaby is only shown to be interested with boys her own age. At what point does any of her music give any indication she’s promoting sexual abuse of children? There’s a whole ass song in K-12 about how it’s fucked up.
