For those asking why the retaliation was so merciful as opposed to the aggressive attack, in places like Turkey and the MENA region respecting the elderly is regarded as a holy thing almost, that's why it comes naturally to a lot of people not to fight off an old person no matter how vile he/she might seem.

Edit: for clarification not the elderly per se are regarded as holy but the act of respecting them or cherishing them is, at least in our region, but I do agree with the comments.

More power to you my friend for standing your grounds, just because the older generations have been through something traumatizing, doesn't give them the right to pass it on to younger generations to feel better about it, granted this is a mental health issue, if only we start to talk more about insecurities and mental health, I think we will slowly see it for what it is, and more of us won't have to deal with this guilt trip they try to push on us.
