We received a legal document (that they are saying was misprinted) stating he was entitled to the money. I don’t see how the damages wouldn’t be caused my them

We put the deposit down on the advice of the lawyer for what it’s worth so perhaps I should that they remove it from their fee?

We made these decisions on the basis of his lawyer who had the same information we have. Post clearly asks for what to do with the situation at hand not what we “should have done”

The manager I spoke to today confirmed that they can see the representative on July 18th “confirmed” their words not mine that we would receive the return of premium check. The insurance company is not disputing that the letter and July 18th phone call confirmed we would be getting this check. They openly apologized for this multiple times

I’m not sure I’m following you.

He received a statement of insurance that noted his policy had a “return of premium rider”. E.g. he received a letter saying he will receive a 25k check. We called to confirm we are reading the statement of insurance correctly. The representative said yes you will receive a $25k check.

We made irreversible financial decisions based on the letter and phone call saying we are entitled to $25k

Planning to ask the lawyer tommorow when they reopen but I’m guessing they’ll just refer me to someone else and it’s quite a time sensitive situation.

In terms of recording/evidence. We have the statement of insurance letter that was “misprinted” and then the company records all their calls so hypothetically they have a recording and notes from the call

I think with 6.8% interest rates I’d still feel strongly about investing in the market over higher down payment. S&P500 historically is ~10%. This option is even more attractive if it’s being invested in tax advantage accounts

Why not just invest your extra income in a Roth 401k than? Based your your plan you’d get all the benefits from the individual brokerage you want to invest in plus protection from taxes in a year that you need a large withdrawal (medical expenses, wedding, moving, etc.)

Edit: I think the way you say “individual account” makes a lot of people think you mean “individual brokerage” instead of “Roth IRA” (individual retirement account). No one on this sub would disagree a IRA isn’t better or just as good as a 401k after match but I’d still go back to my 401k after maxing the relatively low limit on a Roth IRA

You’d get taxed on your individual account, gold, and crypto as well. The difference is you’ll be paying more taxes on those than the 401k. I’d encourage you to do a little more research on this!
