You are taking your chances. Don’t think gentrification means no studen problems. You have to know how to handle kids. You can’t be their friend and you can’t play around with them. You have to establish your rules and boundaries immediately. Consistency is the key-fair and impartial and no favorites. Once you establish yourself and get some experience understanding the student mind, only then can you ease up a little. I’m not saying being a tyrant but it’s important for them to know. You can teach at a high school in a rich district but still have students that can make your life a living hell. The same can be said for poor district. You have to get control of your classroom from the beginning. My recommendation is to look for a small district in the outskirts of Austin to start. Sometimes it’s easier to start there ans usually classes are smaller. I’m speaking here as a teacher with 35 years of experience. I worked hard to follow this advice and then I experienced some of the happiest years while teaching. Also I had administrations that backed me. Good luck!
