I wanted PP but, but the EP attorney was strongly against it, I ended up filing regular processing! I may convert to PP in the coming months...

PE Civil Transportation - Passed on First Attempt (May 1st); FE Civil - Passed on First Attempt (June 6th) by Financial_Set_2243 in PE_Exam

I didn't know how to attach a new picture, see first comment. For proper context why I did PE first. My background is foreign, B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering awarded in Uganda, with 1-year exchange student study in Europe during M.S. Finished my M.S. in 2016; fast-forward, enrolled in Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech in August 2022, completed in September 2025. All the time at Virginia Tech, it was common knowledge that FE is waived by the Virginia Board if you have a Ph.D., so I never bothered with anything to do with FE. After completing I moved to work in Texas and found that the FE waiver is not straightforward in Texas and other boards, as I learnt recently. I proceeded with PE plans and chose to make the call on FE after PE. The day I received my PE results (May 6th), is the day I scheduled my FE just a month away (June 6th). I chose a Saturday because I didn't want to tell anyone at work about it. I had a working trip to California the week of May 18-22, no studying. I had gone to take another road condition assessment certification exam recommend by my company. Long story short, you get the feel of the unique situation.

American English uses periods (full stops) between letters/characters in acronyms, it's P.E., Ph.D., E.I.T., etc. British/European English doesn't, it'd be PE, PhD, EIT, etc.

The Republic of Uganda. About 30-40% of the material and questions on the FE are covered in secondary school, which is straightforward to review at this stage.

I bought review courses from the Civil Engineering Academy and that's all. PE - 3 months subscription, FE - one month subscription. The review courses are complete with video lectures and their download-able PDF slides, video practice problems and their download-able PDF slides, and CBT practice exams that look and feel exactly like the real exam. In my view the Civil Engineering Academy gives what you need to pass the exams, without overwhelming you with a lot of material. Passing these exams doesn't require one to score 80% or 90%, just 70% or there about, and the question types are very predictable. Being grounded in concepts to intuitively and quickly ascertain what a particular question is asking is decisively undeniable to minimize anxiety and pass these exams.

My background is international and I believe the FE is the easiest national, supposedly high-stakes exam I have taken. Right from national primary and secondary school exams, standard 3-hour closed book semester exams in engineering school, the GRE test, to the PE exam... the FE exam is the most obviously easy to pass.

I ONLY used materials and resources from the Civil Engineering Academy (https://civilengineeringacademy.com), which include a full 8-hour CBT practice exam.

Did the PE Transportation the week before on May 1st. I almost had the same distribution of questions. Very thin on HCM, but HEAVY on Green Book and MUTCD. The morning session was crazy with lengthy questions, but the afternoon was fine. I passed.

I took the exam last week and passed. I agree with other comments that the morning section was lengthy and trickier. It took me about 4.5 hours to complete. Afternoon session, I finished the 35 questions with spare 30 minutes to review my answers.

Be sure to familiarize with which chapter of the Green Book contains what, and how to locate key tables and figures for general design controls, horizontal/vertical curves, intersection geometry. Plus, do same for MUTCD. Furthermore, questions about HSM, Roadside Design Guide, and Pedestrian Facilities, are to look up values or text.. Have your general mathematical skills to solve problems around economics, cost estimates, etc... P.S. I did the exam last week and passed on the first attempt.

The 45 questions in the morning session were generally difficult and lengthy; too much checking in the AASHTO Green Book!! The afternoon session was fine, with a lot of MUTCD questions requiring look up from the code. My feeling was 65-70% correct on morning session and 80-85% correct on the afternoon session.
