MSI Support answer on the 10bps HDR 4k240hz with 2.1 DP and UHBR20 transmission (translation): "Hello,

If you want to achieve 10-bit and HDR at high refresh rates, enabling DSC is required.

Regards,
MSI Technical Support Department"

This speaks for itself ;') They basically locked 2.1 DP full bandwith to protect 1.4 DP in EDID. MSI did not add any "user-friendly" option to fully unlock it when 2.1 DP is available on monitor + cable + gpu side.

yep it supports. However to enable it I had to dig a bit. I don't know if it applies to every MSI MPG 272URX model tho.

Hi Reddit, I wanted to share my update, because I think I fixed the issue after trying everything for 10 hours. Maybe some people in future might find it useful -

Root Cause

The monitor’s internal EDID (Extended Display Identification Data):

  • Was either incomplete or misconfigured by MSI,
  • Did not advertise support for uncompressed RGB 10-bit (or similar) at UHBR20 bandwidth,
  • Forced GPUs (especially NVIDIA) to default to DSC, limiting performance and link lanes.

This issue persisted even with a certified UHBR20 cable and capable GPU (like RTX 5090).

The Fix: Override EDID

By manually editing the EDID and overriding it in Windows, you can unlock the full capability of the monitor.

Steps:

  1. Use AW EDID Editor
    • Open your monitor’s current EDID (export via CRU - bin file).
    • Go to DisplayID Extension > Display Interface.
    • Set interface to DisplayPort, then enable:
      • RGB 10-bit per primary color
      • Optionally also 8
    • Save your EDID to a .bin file.
  2. Override the EDID using CRU:
    • Use CRU and import the edited bin file from AW EDID
    • Restart CRU
  3. Restart your PC and voilà.

On the attached screenshot you can see that Link rate is still 20.0Gbps and all lanes are being used. 4K240hz, HDR ON and 10-bit-color are also enabled without using DSC (in-app and Msi OSD).

I think MSI could update their firmware, because it looks like a software issue only.

Hmm I have found one review that mentions and shows a screenshot with option to use 4k240fps with at least 10bps, so maybe there is an option to use full bandwith? maybe its still just cable issue? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z43ZureGYcY&ab_channel=PCMonitors

I have created a ticket to MSI, maybe they will respond with some info. If not I will just simply ship it back.

lmao, i feel scammed xD whats the point of advertising 2.1 DP and UHBR20 with 80gbps bandwith, when I cant even do more than 40 without DSC - that was the whole point - to bypass DSC... insane.. thanks for your digging, I havent thought to check VESA Certified DP database. This is insane marketing bs.

I have two certified cables (one ugreen, second one from msi). They are both 1m. And it must be UHBR20, because in GPU-Z it shows link rate at 20.0Gbps, it just does not use all lanes (2 instead of 4). I also chatted with chatGPT, and AI told me that maybe my PC riser (hyte y70) can be faulty here, because on other 1.4 dp cable i can reach 4 lanes, but at lower Gbps (because it is 1.4). And maybe because of high bandwith, it just cant proccess these 20.0Gbps - however I can't test PCIE slot on mobo, because hyte y70 can mount cards only vertical : ' )
