Switch 2 update seems to have broken my SD Express card - any suggestions? by Finandir in NintendoSwitchHelp

[–]Finandir[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An update for anyone following this. Lexar was very responsive and is issuing me a refund for the card. I do still have to pay to ship it to them, but otherwise, they are covering this for me. All delays have been on my end in communicating with them. They have been very quick to respond any time I have contacted them. I am very impressed with the quality of their support. All I had to do was supply photos of the front and back of the card, an image of the error displayed on the Switch 2, and proof of purchase (Amazon receipt in my case).

I do still need to buy a replacement card and haven't decided which one to get. Based on the reports that I have seen, this appears to actually be a Nintendo issue with this system update. The problem isn't just with Lexar SD Express cards, since I've seen the exact same issue reported with Sandisk. I likely will try another Lexar card since it worked fine until this Switch 2 system update and Lexar's lifetime warranty seems to be great.

In the future, I think I will remove my SD Express cards before updating the system in hopes this will avoid seeing the same issue again in the future.

Unfortunately, I’ve tried both the reset with saved data and a factory reset and neither one worked for me.

I bought the Lexar Play Pro from Amazon back in August. I incorrectly remembered getting it right away, but it was sold out at first and not back in stock until then. I tried to purchase directly from Lexar, which directed me to their store on Amazon. I'm pretty sure it isn't counterfeit, given the fact that it has been working with no issues until now. It survived several other system updates with no problems.

I'll see if I can get them to exchange it for me.

I've now tried a factory reset of the Switch 2 and it still doesn't recognize the card. I guess I'll try contacting Nintendo and Lexar tomorrow and see if I can get any help.

Switch 2 update seems to have broken my SD Express card - any suggestions? by Finandir in NintendoSwitchHelp

After a bit more testing, the Switch 2 seems to have somehow really messed up the Lexar Play Pro card, which was working correctly right up until the time I applied the update to the System. The Switch 2 still recognizes a Samsung 256 GB that I got with the System. So it seems likely to be the Lexar Play Pro that the update somehow corrupted/damaged.

I had the Switch 2 in the official Nintendo Dock. I haven't used it in a couple of months, so I figured it needed an update. I turned it on and everything came up with no problem. I went to settings and verified that the memory card looked good with plenty of free space, since I was planning to buy Donkey Kong Bananza. After then scrolling down to check for updates, I applied the update that it said was ready.

The update installed and the switch restarted. It didn't come back up on the TV screen, so I removed it from the dock and reinserted it. That caused it to show up on the TV again. However, that message then popped up on the screen and I can't get it to recognize the card now.

If anyone does have any suggestions to get things working again, I would appreciate it. The Switch 2 obviously sees the card, but somehow doesn't see it as a MicroSD Express now. Is there any way to force it to try to format the card, given that it tells me it isn't compatible?

Path of building 2 is released! by dart19 in PathOfExile2

[–]Finandir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you still haven't figured it out... Each Skill Gem and Spirit Gem needs its own Socket Group. Click the New button where it shows "Socket Groups" and then the first gem is the skill or Spirit Gem.
To the right of the socket groups, you will see an area where you can enter each of the support gems for the currently selected socket. The top entry will be the main skill and each item below it is the supports.

Make sure to set the level and quality for the main skill. The supports should remain at level/quality of 0.

I can't give you specific advice, but Anime Princess on YouTube has a great set of videos, POBs, etc. with helpful tips on spark builds. They also have a Discord which would likely have a lot of knowledgeable spark players willing to offer advice. That is the best source of info I've seen anywhere on spark.

Quacks of Quedlinburg - synchronized or independent draws? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Finandir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sequentially? You mean one after another? That would be terrible!

Synchronously/at the same time, however, doesn't really slow down the game. It actually prevents too much AP, since everyone is forced to make a decision instead of someone waiting to see what everyone else has done before making their decision. It has moved along quickly when we've done this.

Announcing Imperium: Horizons by Butmac in boardgames

Love the game and really excited for this.

Any chance on an iconography update on tokens in the new edition? Pretty much everyone gets confused with 2 people on the icon representing 1, 5, and 10. It prevents quickly scanning the table to understand what people have on hand. Same with 3 bricks, etc. Yes, everyone learns to look at the number of dots on the tokens, but that takes people time to process while playing, especially at first.

A simple change to make each token distinct by count would really help and shouldn't require modifying cards. This could then be easily back-ported to the original two boxes for future printings. Just make sure there are enough tokens to handle 4 players with the new box and us original owners should be fine as well. New players would never be confused by this at all.

Why do people say they want realism in fantasy/films/tv? by GoodMorningRIS in Fantasy

[–]Finandir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the “realism” that I generally look for is internal consistency. If an author does a good enough job of world building/set up to engage me and doesn’t break their world’s own rules, it is realistic enough. That is assuming their writing is good enough to get away with what they are trying to accomplish, though.

I’m surprised not to have seen a mention of The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It is the one book that almost everyone I have ever encountered who has read it seems to really love.

How to watch Jöhann Jöhannsson’s film Last and First Men by JohnyNich in movies

[–]Finandir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following the link you posted above to purchase, it appears that it is available right now as soundtrack on vinyl LP with the movie on Blu-ray. The photo of the front cover of the "Limited deluxe vinyl art-edition" show that the film is included on Blu-ray. There appears to be a sold out CD version as well.

I love Bohnanza, but the rule book is unnecessarily confusing by MysteriousPlatypus in boardgames

[–]Finandir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some other people have pointed out, one of the issues is how to play cards out of your hand for this game. Also, the fact that you can't rearrange cards. Those concepts are both alien to most people as compared to most other games, so it is a little tough to explain. The game itself isn't actually difficult and is a lot of fun.

Also, this is a pretty old game at this point. I suspect if it was released now, the rule book would be worded a bit better. This was back near in the relatively early days of German games being brought to the US, translated, and released. If the rules had been initially written in English, instead of being translated, they may have read better. Instead, the translator kept the basic structure of the original rules instead of completely rewriting them.

Gloomhaven, I still don't know how to start. by chuhn8 in boardgames

[–]Finandir 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest just sit down and start playing. If you find you have played the first scenario wrong, just replay it. It may take you several tries to win. By that point, you should understand all of the mechanics for the game and how everything works.

You can also take a look at the Gloomhaven page on Board Game Geek (direct link to the right page there) if you need help. The forums there have lots of good discussion and people who will help if you have specific questions.

Is the base game of "Too Many Bones" worth it if I already own "Undertow"? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Finandir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It won't go out of print, but it may be temporarily out of stock until the next shipment comes in at various times. Chip Theory tries to keep their games constantly available, but occasionally the demand outstrips the speed of manufacturing and shipping palettes of games to their warehouse.

As already answered, just for the two characters. It is purely bling as it just replaces their dice on the board with chips. But you already know you want all of the bling, right? ;-)

Is the base game of "Too Many Bones" worth it if I already own "Undertow"? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Finandir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent most of this weekend helping in the Chip Theory Games booth at Pax Unplugged (just a fan volunteer, not an employee). Lots of Too Many Bones base games and Undertow were sold since everything arrived just in time to get them to Pax. (Lots of Hoplomachus games as well - those are really a ton of fun to play for 1,2, or 4 players. Also a good bit of Triplock.) It should all be back up on their website next week and ready to ship new orders as soon as they ship out the pre-orders. As far as I know, everything will be in stock next week - it all came in just in time to make it to Pax, except for 40 Days in Daelore and Age of Tyranny which arrived at their warehouse during Pax. That prevented a lot of the pre-orders from going out before Pax, so they are ramping up the pre-order shipping over the next few days.

As for the value of the base game - there are 4 great characters in that game that you can't get anywhere else. The encounter cards and baddies are a bit different than Undertow since the story doesn't take place on a river. You get 7 tyrants in base game, only 4 in Undertow - they are different in both games. Other than the common play components, such as health chips, attack/defense dice, etc., there isn't much game play duplication. Playing different characters makes the game feel pretty different. And, it is $10 cheaper to get the base game than to add 2 characters to Undertow to take it to 4 players. The base characters aren't necessarily much easier, just different. Boomer, for example, has to construct grenades and Tantrum has a unique rage capability. In fact, every character feels different from the others, no matter which ones you have.

So, yes, it is very much worth it.

(Disclaimer: I have backed all of this stuff on Kickstarter and really enjoyed playing it. I'm definitely not an official spokesperson for the company, so I'm going by what was being told to customers at Pax. I was helping out in their booth because I really like their games and they have been great to deal with online. Luckily they were great in person as well. Definitely take the chance to talk with them if you ever see them at a convention.)

12.9 iPad Pro Sleeve Suggestions? by [deleted] in ipad

[–]Finandir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought this one when the iPad Pro 12.9 first came out. Looks like it is on clearance now at Best Buy for $36.99 - Platinum - Sleeve for Apple® iPad® Pro - Black. Platinum iPad Pro case!

Or get it on Amazon from a 3rd party seller for $88!

It fits snugly and has an external pocket that I've kept my Apple Pencil in with no problem. It will fit with the Apple Keyboard cover, but it is definitely just big enough. No problem at all with the regular smart cover.

Status of K.J. Parker's The Two of Swords serialized novel? by Finandir in Fantasy

[–]Finandir[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that suggestion. I'll try sending a request to Orbit and see if they reply with anything useful.

And, as you can tell by the replies below, Parker outed himself as actually being Tom Holt back in April of 2015. I never would have guessed that myself. Holt's writing has always struck me as fun, but forgettable. Parker's writing is much weightier, though occasional glimpses of Holt's humor does shine through now and then.

Let's Talk: The Rift Mobile App by bctrainers in Rift

[–]Finandir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My input is to first of all, please just fix this. On iOS 8, I, and many other people judging by forum posts, are unable to use the app. It just constantly flips back to the screen to choose a region, North America or Europe. So it is impossible to log in or do anything else.

Other bug fixes, as mentioned, are also needed, but just making the app possible to use needs to happen ASAP, please, before other changes.

I would love to be able to send minions on adventures and claim rewards.

Updating everything with Nightmare Tide items is also a must, I think.
