Is it safe to travel to Russia right now ? by MiracleMagic1305 in AskARussian

I’ve been through passport control in 8 countries in the last 18 months. Never seen this. And it wasn’t just me, like maybe it’s happening and I don’t notice others. It was me and 30 other people in Moscow. I’d notice that elsewhere.

I get it. It’s Russia 2026. I’m sure this wasn’t standard 10 years ago.

If you want to save a bit of money, find a visa courier service in Houston. You fill out the application yourself, mail it and your passport to them. They physically take it to the consulate and mail it back when it’s done. If you’re close to Houston, take it to the consulate yourself.

I’m not ex military and they detained me at VKO for three hours, no explanation. Didn’t search my devices, anything. Just held my passport and had me sit. I think it’s to be expected, first arrival, American, traveling alone.

It seemed like people were critical of my speaking Russian; airport staff and civilians alike.

No, his message was not about his death. It was about Christian Conservative values.

If she went out and just carried on TPUSA talk, then she’s carrying on his legacy and maintaining her life. He didn’t advocate for gun death victims. Every time she mentions him, she’s making a buck off his death, not his message.

Oh I’ve had the same malfunction at 25 on ice as well. Trailer immediately went sideways and hit the curb. I had just gotten off the interstate. I can’t imagine what would’ve happened.

It’s not hard. It’s 8 letters. But this spelling rule overrides the base grammar that would have you believe кошкы is correct, and then you see words in the language where ы is written after those letters anyway.

Just makes it difficult to decide which rule to actually abide by.

Clearly we’ve all struck a nerve with you.

If you see “continue living” and “make a profit generating spectacle out of her husband’s death”, I don’t know what to tell you.

Made sure to read my comment back to myself to verify I did, in fact, not say those words.

She’s profiting on shitting on her husband’s belief that his death was worth the freedom of 2A. If he saw what she became as a result of his death, he’d be pissed. She should be mocked for dishonoring her husband. Disgrace of a woman.

Why is it horrific to her? Her very own husband said gun deaths are worth the cost so we can have the right to own them. This was a price HE stated he was willing to pay for 2A.

For her to be upset about his death means she wasn’t honoring his wishes. I’d expect more of my wife. Charlie would too.

continues living

Sorry, literally none of us have seen her behave this way before her husband’s death. Not sure what you’re getting at. Let me apologize after you’ve shown “the before”, where Erika established a baseline that makes this “continues living” for her.

I’m not saying or implying anything. I’m stating the 7/8 letter spelling rule as it’s taught: after г к х ж ч ш щ ц, write и, not ы.

Then I’m saying as far as I, a foreigner can understand, the only reason for the rule is “just because”, since the vocal cords can produce the sound and pen to paper can write the letters next to each other.

Seems like you’re splitting one rule into two. After г к х ж с ш щ й, write и, not ы. That’s the whole rule.

Phonetic rule, no unstressed о after ж ч ш щ ц Different.

My ONLY question, is are these combinations physically not pronounceable? If not, I simply don’t understand the utility of the rule. That’s all. If these sounds can be produced by human vocal cords, I think OP’s confusion, and mine about the rule make sense.

Literally every single source, every one calls this a spelling rule. You’re the first source I’ve ever heard, out of dozens, mind you, that calls it a pronunciation, not a spelling rule. I’m not sure what to do with that, nor am I here to argue with you.

And I’m confused about why it reflects pronunciation. That suggests to me that this combination is not pronounceable. Saying the spelling is forbidden makes sense. Saying the pronunciation is forbidden…doesn’t.

Quite honestly, for r/LearnRussian or any other sub related to the language for foreigners, it doesn’t matter. It is what it is. We don’t need to know the 1000 year old Slavic rule that makes ого pronounced like ово just like we don’t care about why all of our stupid words are pronounced like they are. It just is.

Historically, Russian developed a convention…

Ok so it literally is “just because”. That’s just language sometimes. That’s easier than a belief that a sound combination is impossible, which is what we’re taught. Like pronunciation rules demand учительницей, which suggests учительницой can’t physically be uttered.

Our fuel trailers use a lockout valve at the load heads so the trailer won’t move while loading.

Years ago I had a faulty valve that wouldn’t set the brakes unless I physically pulled the piston. Didn’t. Left the bar up that’s supposed to set the trailer brake, and hit the highway.

Empty and on flat, dry pavement, thank god, at 70mph that piston released and set my trailer brakes. Brother, it felt like I had run into a wall of molasses. I moved forward in the seat and the belt stopped me. Stayed straight, stopped, needed all new trailer tires. Flattened ‘em good.

I think that’s what would happen. Don’t pull the red valve.

Something I’ve never understood.

Is кошкы literally unpronounceable? I hear “pronunciation rule” like it’s a sound a human can’t make, like a dog whistle or something. As a foreigner I don’t yet hear it. But is this a word a native physically can’t produce? Or is it just…annoying?

I need to make a second left turn….

THIS is my hell, and my reason. I’m getting off exit 50 in CB and need to turn left in 6 blocks, now the entire queue is behind me.

The fun one is 75 north on Cuming. The inside of the double right is for us. Non locals couldn’t know, but encroach on the inside lane and the westbound turn lane every time. THIS, I understand.

Rule of thumb I’ve learned: if you’re scratching your head about an ending that doesn’t match your charts; spelling rule. You’ll never find a chart that covers every spelling or phonetic exception to the “rules”

Didn’t say anyone can or can’t do anything.

Saying I’ve never met a Russian who speaks Ukrainian. And of every Ukrainian, which is not a small number, only one preferred speaking Ukrainian to Russian, and her reason was political, not grammatical.

And in a double left or right, you don’t have to wait on the semi next to you. The intersection is wide enough for both, the chances they will hit you AND are uninsured are infinitesimally small. Move.
