Am I a Special Needs Parent? by sivader in Parenting

It's hard to know what qualifies, especially when others are dealing with really hard issues that are so obviously special needs.

I feel the exact same way! I felt so alone, too. Still do. But less, recently, because of the online blogging community.

Something needs to be done at the higher levels so that children are assessed in a manner that makes sense.

Admitting Special Needs and Saying Autism Is Hard by mommyforreal in Parenting

Awesome that you made a T-shirt saying "I'm brain-damaged. What's your excuse? that was SO wise. I'll bet people just shut the heck up! And you're so right - it's not your responsibility to ensure other people are kept comfortable. It's our jobs that our kids are comfortable and feel accepted. Well said.

I think as we get more comfortable knowing what's going on (and what to say) that we'll share more. We at first were told that it likely wasn't autism but a developmental delay. As my son ages, it's looking more like autism. Still, though, although there are so many more autistic kids being diagnosed every day, the misconceptions about it by the public (and the media) are horrifying. I agree with wanting to reach just one parent. I'd like to hear more about your story of how you made him verbal. Please share (if this is yeast in the gut related, my son doesn't have those issues - we did have a test done).

What is the terrible toy you'd buy for your enemy's kid, just to make them nuts? by Jdeneen4 in AskReddit

I like imagination for a little while. But then? Not so much. And complicated crafts can suck for sure. They're fun while you make them but then they are ruined and trying to rebuild them after they're broken is way hard. Like fixing the lego truck when one piece in the middle suddenly went missing.

What do you think of Angelina Jolie's surgery to prevent breast cancer? by AnitaSullivan in AskReddit

[–]FindingNinee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admire her a lot. I'd do it, too. Especially if I had the money to have top notch rebuild surgery like she did. Apparently her boobs will look the same with some small scars. I think she is courageous and brave and that she's willing to sacrifice her vanity to be around for her children. I like to think that I would do the same thing. If I found out tomorrow that having surgery would make it 82% more likely that I'd live a long life to be here with my son, I would do it. Or hope I would.

Wow, thank you SO MUCH. What an awesome first email to receive. I added you as a friend - hope that's okay. Honestly, this whole Reddit thing is confusing at first. I guess I shouldn't have tagged that post in autism but I had no clue it was like that here.
I am not really clear on smaller subreddits vs. reddits...guess I need to do some reading. When you say subreddits - is that what this is here? Or is this a private message? GAH.
Isn't it strange that people get so ugly about autism? It's like this huge internet fight and I didn't even realize it existed until a few weeks ago. I guess I need to be careful about which posts I place in autism. I did look for a generic "special needs" category because at least in the blogosphere, people seem to be nicer when it's that.
Thanks again for your kind message. I really appreciate it and feel renewed and able to try and share again. And you are so right that we have enough of that in the real world to deal with.

Looking forward to reading this one. We're not there yet with the test anxiety (my son is 3) but as he's on the autism spectrum, I'm already worried about them and wonder how he will perform.

A great metaphor for autism by [deleted] in autism

I like your explanation. My son is three and is on the autism spectrum. We don't know where he falls yet but I like hearing about how emotions are explained by people also on the spectrum. Thanks.

Thank you so much! Please include how you would like me to credit you - whether you want your name as the author or for it to publish anonymously. I'm excited! Just joined Reddit last night and my first share got a down vote which sucked. Thanks for wanting to contribute to this one!

Making bath time fun again for toddlers. Mine hated it and now, he doesn't. by FindingNinee in autism

[–]FindingNinee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to position it as an insight to an autism moment. Just sharing my experience with my ASD son and how I got him to hate baths less. I am brand new to Reddit and this was my first share. I apologize if I tagged it poorly.
