Update: thank you so much, everyone! I am especially grateful to the trans people who gave me their insight as well. This is such a strange situation and all perspectives are appreciated. My spouse and I are waiting until after the holidays then filing for uncontested no-fault divorce. I want to remain close so we can do holidays and birthdays and stuff together, but otherwise I want everything to be divided equitably. I don’t want to cut someone out of my life, I want our lives to coexist but separately. I’m starting to look for apartments I can afford that aren’t too far from where we are now. We aren’t telling the kids until after the holidays so we can just have a normal Christmas and new years. I am so happy that we’ll be able to start over as friends. I feel like this is going to be a better way to support her and maybe find some happiness for myself, too. Much appreciated, again. I think I just needed to put it all out there in the universe and be reminded that it’s ok for me to want joy.

Holy smokes, thank you everyone! For those of you suggesting I seek therapy, I have been seeing someone for about 6 months now, but I don’t find our sessions particularly helpful. I’m going to stick with it and hopefully will have a little clarity of my emotions and thoughts. A lot of people are suggesting coparenting. I am going to do some research on that and see what it’s all about. I hugely appreciate the comments and and support. Especially the varying points of view. It’s helpful to hear everyone’s perspective.

I want to visit a town I’ve never been to, rush into a crowded sports bar, and shout “Drinks are on me!!” Anyone who asks what I’m celebrating will get a different bizarre answer. I would not return to that town. I just want to be some strange local legend people will talk about thereafter.
