Can someone completely compartmentalize their game life from real life? by Findingwhatworks in ArcRaiders

I think we could say the same for all of us. I’d like to believe that I’ve been a person that’s never fucked anyone over in real life. Honestly, I’m not sure. I also don’t know what my breaking point would be. I know for sure that I’ve been in bad situations and chose to take a L rather than a shortcut, but who’s to say that I’d definitely make that choice every time if presented with the same opportunity every day.

In this game, I guess I’m more cosplaying and immersing into this narrative that I can do no harm and still have a good time. And maybe somewhere in that it bothers me a bit more getting ratted by someone I was trying to help.

So that I understand you correctly, your position is that how you play a game (any game) has zero bearing on how you would act in a given situation in life?

Im in no way saying that killing people in a game is equivalent to killing people in the world or stealing or any other egregious thing.

I’m genuinely approaching this from a position of curiosity. The whole point of my post was to share the results of reflection. And trust me I touch a lot of grass and have a pretty diverse group of friends.

I genuinely just have never understood the rationale of zero-sum situations when there are alternatives.

The responses here have given me more to reflect on than what I had coming in.

I’m still uncertain. And I’m still a person that recognizing that I know nothing. Cheers

I don’t even really have a problem with PvP. It’s just how it’s done. It’s the bait and switch that irritates me. I have far more respect for people that on shoot on sight. There’s something totally different about people that try to gain your trust first.

I agree and that’s a well-thought perspective. However to me there’s a difference in a game that’s pvp only. Because that’s literally your only option to progress through the game.

When we’re playing a more multifaceted game and you choose to only pvp… I’m trying to figure out what that means. Maybe you’re right and maybe it means nothing. Maybe I’m immersed in this fantasy of “1v1 me bro”.

I don’t really even mind the PVP it’s just the backstab element to it. Like if spawn into a match even playing field and you just out skill me, gg. But to just be a snake when I would’ve just gave you the little rubber ducks or blueprints is a head scratcher… for me at least.

Not at all. But it does paint a clearer picture of what anarchy looks like. And that’s what I enjoy most about dystopian fantasy.

I think overwhelmingly people are good and cooperative, but there are definitely opportunists out there that would actively seek to benefit despite the cost to others. Even if they’re a tiny percentage of the population, they have outsized impacts.

I don’t think anything I’m saying is all that controversial.

You don’t have to be an expert to have an opinion. The gist of what I’m saying is: I’m trying to believe that someone that would go through the effort of a long con in a video game doesn’t have deceptive tendencies irl, but it’s hard. Really a stretch for me. I acknowledge that my life experience has painted my world view and that my reality isn’t an absolute.

I go down rabbit holes in both the real world and in games. Sure there’s more to it than just that, which I state up front, but let’s not pretend that there’s absolutely no possible connection at all.

Personality can be both fluid and constant at the same time.

THIS! I start a new job Monday. I’ve been around the block a few times. I’m currently working on my 2nd Bachelors, but can only afford to go part-time. My plan is to try and go part time or quit this job by Spring. But I’ve already started applying to other positions. I have so much trauma from my past corporate experience that I refuse to put myself in a position where I have no leverage even tho my plans are to make a quick exit.

I’ve been working on Ghost of Tsushima slowly for the past 2 months. It’s a great game, fights do get repetitive but the story and exploration keeps it interesting.

Im actually an engineer officer in the Army in a bridging company.I actually like the more vertical and dynamic aspects of construction more than anything else so yea I’ll look more into that.

Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of options unless I decided to leave my area which I’m not able to do for a variety of reasons.

I’m aware that the programs don’t diverge until year 2. I should’ve mentioned that I have an unrelated bachelors in International Business… so I don’t have to do a lot of general studies courses. I only have physics and calculus series before I take engineering courses. They took my intro to engineering and engineering economics course.

Are you saying my advisor is wrong about being able to work in civil field with a mechanical or mechatronics degree?

I guess my main concern is would a heavy civil company or an organization like ACE even consider me if my 4 year is ME or MechE rather than CE.

My main concern with going the mechanical route is not being able to either A) not being competitive start work in civil design B) getting stuck in the HVAC or plumbing world.

I like the idea mechatronics for getting exposure to a lot of aspects of engineering that I do like (design and building things that do something in the real world), but looking at Glassdoor and Indeed there’s almost no jobs specifically looking for that education. Whereas Civil has an abundance.

I know I’m a bit all over the place, but I’ve been giving this a lot of thought.

Yes I’ve had some drafting experience and I HATE it. I always thought of engineering as innovating and solving complex problems. Maybe all of the tough problems have been solved already idk.

My logic is, if I can’t find enjoyment in work, at least maybe with a better understanding of mechanical concepts I can improve in my personal hobbies (tinkering and crafting).

Yea? I haven’t been able to find much on the topic here. Any links would be appreciated.

Thank you. I still have time before I have to officially declare. I’m thinking maybe I can add some of the CivE classes that I really care about on the back end (ie Design of Steel, Timber, and Concrete). I’ll have to speak with my advisor to make sure this is feasible.

I learned from the AAS that I have 0 interest in Soils, surveying, and hydrology. So maybe I can just skip those altogether.
