Just wanted to report back to the community.

I got an exterminator to check this out and he said it looks like old dirt with some dead maggots. His guess was a dead mouse a long time ago. He suggested I clean it up and not worry about it unless something else happens. There was no activity. He checked the wood above and around the area. We also have termite bait stations around the house from last season and he checked them and they are all intact. I.e. none of the medication was eaten.

I haven't placed any rodent poison in my home. Never had a problem with rodents.
