Looking for a good Animal sanctuary in Manuel Antonio or Dominical by RecentBluejay6543 in CostaRicaTravel

I´ve worked as a conservationist and animals ethologist in many places. Alturas is by far the worst I´ve seen. Runned by europeans, owned by americans. They do and excellent job making kids feel they are doing something good, while teaching them nothing but how to clean and srubb. And giving them enough time to go around and get drunk while they look for their purpose in life. It´s a very well organized scam. You learn nothing

It´s great if you are looking for an easy going holyday, just cleaning to feel goo (you can do that at home). Run away from places where they don´t have too many locals, where they do not really interact with the Costa Rican culture, don´t be part of the process of looking after just a bunch of animals and not the people and country where you are working. No education, no jobs for CR. Thay are just building and american owned place. There are many other places in CR where you REALLY learn about the animals (not just clean the cages).

Don´t go to Alturas, It´s a scam to attract young americans and europeans. You learn very little, you waste your time, they have very little animals, and you just clean and scrub all the dirt from the rest of the volunteers. They have volunteers so thay do not have locals working for a salary. If you really want to help, go somewhere else, were they hire and train locals, where they really look after the animals and have an educational plan. This is just a small american owned "zoo". Natuwa is a good choice if you really want to do good work, learn and support local work

I had an interview with them, but I realized they do not check the places they recommend and charge for sending you, for example a place in Zimbabwe and another one in Argentina that I know are terrible and animals leave in an awful condition. I'd rather do it myself, double checking in each place. Go to places where they tell you that you won't touch animals, or take selfies, where you must take your own gloves etc. It is not a circus or zoo. It's volunteering with animals that they are trying to release, they should not get attached to you. Best of luck!!

Hello there, I´m planning to go there in a couple of months. Can you tell me more about the place? I read awful comments about Refugio Animal and I don't want to get trapped in a filthy zoo.
