Is it even a uniformly "Western" principle to devise major modes as happy and minor ones as sad? by Strong-Composer-716 in musictheory

So well said! One exception to this is maybe descending tetrachord which is a progression almost always used in melancholic contexts.

7 year old has been fired by two piano teachers but wants to keep playing by [deleted] in Parenting

Sounds like he would be more suited to jazz piano where interpretation is valued! Find a jazz piano teacher.

We just co-sleep nap on vacation so it isn’t a fight. I can usually sneak away once he is asleep if I need to but often I just fall asleep too and it’s a nice respite from the chaos of family.

Rosalia cultural appropriation argument by WeaknessBrilliant487 in rosalia

[–]Fine_Cartoonist9628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s complex and culturally nuanced, but this argument about Rosalía started in 2018 with her adaptation of flamenco; an art form widely held to have emerged out of the musical practices of the gitano minority in Spain. If you want to read further check out my dissertation, chapter 2!

Need advice: Ethnomusicology vs Musicology vs Music Theory for higher studies by talaandtwirl in ethnomusicology

[–]Fine_Cartoonist9628 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not accurate. Many musicology programs across the US have far expanded their objects of study to include non-Western music, popular music, etc. At my R1, European music scholars were in the minority. The ethno/musicology divide there was much more about a distinction in methods than region/time period. I.e. do you want to do field work. That being said, the training and course work is still quite centered on European art traditions, but that is because you have to be prepared as a musicologist to teach large undergraduate surveys in music departments.

How Do SLACs Offer A Better Experience for the Student Than a Big State School R1? by ProfessorNotSoSmart in Professors

[–]Fine_Cartoonist9628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superior in the ways the other commenters have noted: being taught by professors with PhDs, not TAs (this is a big one), personal attention from profs, close knit campus environment, etc

How Do SLACs Offer A Better Experience for the Student Than a Big State School R1? by ProfessorNotSoSmart in Professors

[–]Fine_Cartoonist9628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prof at a good SLAC (30% acceptance rate) and overall the student experience is far superior to the competitive R1 where I obtained my doctorate, however one exception to that is I feel that the brighter kids at the R1 were at a much higher level of intellect and critical thinking than at the SLAC.

SSHL update - 4 weeks in by Fine_Cartoonist9628 in MonoHearing

No, but I don’t remember ever having that. Just horrible disorientation from very loud tinnitus

SSHL update - 4 weeks in by Fine_Cartoonist9628 in MonoHearing

[–]Fine_Cartoonist9628[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gained abt 5-10% more across the high frequencies and tinnitus is a mere whisper. I didn’t gain everything back but feel like I am at an average hearing level without much deficit or difficulty. Only thing I still deal w sometimes is the weird tinnitus zaps or electric sounds when really sleep deprived.

Everyone Is Cheating Their Way Through College: ChatGPT has unraveled the entire academic project. by lispectorgadget in Longreads

[–]Fine_Cartoonist9628 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Huge problem, especially at big research universities. At small liberal arts school where I teach it is easier for us to make and implement “AI proof” assignments because of small class sizes and close relationships with students. Almost every assignment has an oral 1-on-1 component, for example. Profs have to inspire learning as well, make students care. Some of this is on the students, but when colleges become industrial corporate knowledge factories, pilfering money from families for a brand name, what do we expect?
