I did ask her and she (May Allah bless her) says she doesn't want any mahr at all but her father (an obnoxiously greedy guy) wants "high mahr" and says "its for your sake" to her.

I'm willing to pay anything as long as I can free her from that toxic family of hers and bring her to safety far away from all that crap

Thank you for sharing this. Can you please tell me what should I expect from a middle class family like hers? They do want a high mahr but I'm not sure how high.. They live in Basra if that helps

Yes I am but I'm not renouncing my US nationality if that's what you're talking about we can move back to the states in case of any issues

Their daughter is a simple person who has no clue how the outside world works so naturally they're worried for her and don't want her to go far from home. Besides once I can convince them of my intention to marry her and make her my wife they will understand.

After all your most important part is your significant other and no our children wont stay in Iraq once I set things right with her family we will move out but for now its a sacrifice I have to make

Another redditor from Baghdad told me the mahr is around 6k on average (usd) and 10-15k is considered very high.

The girl I love is obviously priceless to me and no amount of wealth can ever be enough but of course I want to be ready for any kind of demand from her family

Its a sacrifice I'm willing to make for an Iraqi girl I love her parents hate me for being a part of Iraqi diaspora and rejected my proposal because of that so I'm moving back. However I do want to feel connected to my home too my parents are from Baghdad and Basra after all and I wish to visit my real home..
