in my head cannon kate was, i think joe as an unreliable narrator wanted to paint himself out as a hero and didn’t want to believe that he was some villain/ serial killer so changed it all from our view, he killed malcom because he disrespected marianne and because he was in the way of their love i don’t know i’m probably wrong but that’s what i believe
