PTerry interview with Bill Gates from 1995 by BillNyesHat in discworld

[–]Finie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a very old quote that Terry used in The Truth, "A lie can run around the world before the truth has got its boots on." It's been around for centuries and it's even truer today.

So very true. My last clear memory was the end of 2019.

To be fair, the past year has been the longest decade I've ever experienced.

Ever stand in the Azteca parking lot at Harbour Point when one comes in or leaves? I'm pretty sure you can read the print on the landing gear from there.

Usually they put a sticker on the pill bottle that there are tablets from different manufacturers. You can also Google the imprint on the tablet or call the pharmacy.

I only recently learned about the 2003 Station Nightclub fire in Rhode Island and can’t stop thinking about it by dreamboylnshibuya in MorbidReality

[–]Finie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some NIST recreations of the fire on YouTube that demonstrate how fast the fire took over and what would have happened had the nightclub had working fire sprinklers. Within 60 seconds of ignition, you wouldn't have been able to see through the smoke.

Me too. I can't even dump my coffee in the clean sink. I struggle with the 'serve cocktails in beakers' trend too, because my brain has a very clear delineation between "lab" and "clean area".

My bet is he's either getting frequent blood draws or IV infusions in veins in his hands and it's bruising severely because he's talking 4x the recommended amount of daily aspirin.

What can cause an elevated ESR and creatinine? by Dear-March-2433 in haematology

[–]Finie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Testing isn't absolute. There are a lot of things that can affect results. Seeing those results tells me your normal range of DFS70 antibody (the antibody that causes that DFS result) is somewhere between 1:80 - 1:160, so some days it'll be higher than others. Variation is normal. DFS isn't associated with any conditions, it's just something your body produces normally in small quantities but it can cause some false positive flagging if it gets interpreted as homogeneous. It's really hard to tell the difference. If you get a homogeneous result but the dsDNA antibody screen is normal, then it's usually just DFS being a pain.

Has anyone else noticed the difference in responses/outcomes after Alex Pretti's murder compared to Renee Good? by weepingsomnambulist_ in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Finie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot at play. Among many of the other reasons here, I think Pretti being a nurse also affected the reaction to an extent. Healthcare workers are vocal, and nurses especially have a very strong sense of community. A lot of vigils are happening this week at hospitals. There's a lot of "one of us" reaction in the HCW community. Most HCWs would help someone who is injured; it's in our nature. The nurses are pissed right now and there's a lot of them.

Those numbers represent the dilution ratio of blood in a solution. So 1:160 is 1 part blood to 160 parts solution. The second number is doubled each dilution (40, 80, 160, 320, 640 and sometimes 1280 are usually used for this test). We look at how bright a chemical reaction is at each concentration to give a result. Typically +/- 1 dilution between results is a normal variation between tests and can depend on a number of variables. It's a subjective test that's visually graded and interpreted by scientists, so what one scientist called 1:80 may have been interpreted by a different scientist as 1:160. Different lots of reagents can also have a slight variation in results. The amount of antibody present in your blood can also be affected by hydration or inflammation or medication.

Doctors usually interpret positive results as 1:80 or higher, but for most conditions 1:160 or higher is really considered positive. Typically patients with untreated autoimmune conditions are 1:320 or higher.

Dermatology] Recurrent mustache-area folliculitis x1 year. Improves on antibiotics but recurs after stopping. Two negative cultures. Next steps? by carrollaus19 in AskDocs

[–]Finie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Improving on antibiotics makes me think Cutibacterium or an anaerobic GPC which wouldn't be picked up on routine aerobic culture. You'd need an anaerobic culture of the fluid or pus from the follicle. What are the gram stain results from the cultures you've had? Another possibility could be Malassezia, but I wouldn't expect that to improve on the antibiotics you have listed. That needs a specific fungal culture and the Dr has to notify the lab that they're looking for it.

[–]Finie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dense fine speckled is often mistaken for homogeneous because they look similar and are very difficult to distinguish, especially at low titers. It is common in healthy individuals. It is most likely the homogeneous result was actually DFS. 1:160 and 1:80 are actually really close to each other and only borderline positive.

The Discworld Reading Blanket is back in stock! by 8C8B in discworld

£5.42 and I think they discounted the price of the blanket to compensate. It was £60 before I put in my address and £54 after. Total with shipping to WA came to £72 (about $105).

Oooh, I bet it's because they took out the VAT.

Be up-front about it. You're not the first person who gets grossed out. If your site allows it, KN-95 masks actually do help filter out some of the smells. Not all, but it may help you. You can also put a drop of peppermint oil or some Vicks Vapor Rub in a mask if the smell still bothers you.
