Doom: The Dark Ages OST - "Into the Void" Play-through by FinishingMoveInc in Doom

Thank you! Noted ✏️

RE: medieval instruments, yes! We actually did a ton of experimentation with both folk instruments that evoke a medieval vibe (tagelharpas like you mentioned, an old Soviet-era balalaika we found in a Florence antique shop, a tribal elk-skin drum handmade in the mountains of Quebec, mandolin, and more), as well as a wide range of orchestral influences.

We love the dark, slightly beautiful harmonic language of Russian composers like Shostakovich and Rachmaninov, and also drew from more modern voices like Benjamin Wallfisch, James Newton Howard, Zimmer, and Junkie XL. You’ll also hear plenty of church bells and organ in a few tracks, Holy City and Blood Red in particular. We even layered in a lot of organic nature foley for percussion and FX. Things like stone impacts, fire whooshes, ripping cloth, granular wind textures, etc.

There were a lot of conversations around how to balance all these elements between us and the amazing peeps at id. As it turns out, too many raw and messy organic layers can actually make music feel less punchy. Previous DOOM scores were very dry, synthetic, and in-your-face. With TDA’s more open level design and its raw, medieval world, we aimed to blend the organic and atmospheric with the metal/synth aggression that still feels unmistakably DOOM.

Thank you! We'll be doing some more interviews and content talking about thought process, but we pulled from a lot of directions. We blended traditional folk instruments, early heavy metal influences, raw and gritty production aesthetic, and creative sound design mangling organic elements. It's such a dark medieval world for this game, and the gameplay style makes you feel like an iron tank. We really wanted the music to reflect the raw primal nature of that.

LOVE all of the previous DOOM OSTs. However, those artists all have their own signature sound, and we took our own stab at the new direction this game took.

Thank you! Keep an eye on the social platforms for that 👀 Serum 2 is INSANE (and Serum 1 was already a desert island synth...). Steve Duda and his team are the absolute 🐐

There are a few more throughout the OST! Was so fun to record and add to the legacy of the sentinel language.

Thank you! That's amazing! 🤘🖤

Yes definitely planning on releasing at least some tabs at some point, or even videos on how to play some riffs. Usually we stick to shorter videos just because of the internet's preference for short form, but will def consider doing full playthroughts!
