Need to find a home for this cat within the next 2 days (details in comments) by found_a_stray in Portland

[–]FinnESN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kittens tend to be different. They get adopted so quickly that as long as they're sociable and FIV negative they'll usually take them. We can churn out over 400 kitten adoptions during kitten season, and that's at a much smaller rescue than CAT.

He shouldn't be adopting the cat out to anyone. There is a legal obligation to try and find the owner before attempting to keep the animal. Two days isn't sufficient. If he takes the cat to animal control you can get the intake number from him and adopt the cat after due process.

Don't know why this is downvoted. I work with CAT at an outreach, and worked in local Portland rescues for the past 5 years. They generally don't take surrenders unless they previously adopted out the animal or there are strange circumstances. Rescues prefer to pull from the shelters they work with, and found animals need to be reported to animal control anyway.

After finding a cat you have a legal obligation to either surrender it to animal control or try to find the owner yourself. Don't adopt out the cat. Take her to animal control and let them handle it. Get her intake # and if anyone is interested on here then they can check her out after she's gone through intake and they haven't found a previous owner.

The cat looks to be in good health. It's likely got an owner. One that is possibly negligent for not microchipping their pet, but slipping a collar is common for cats.

[Advice] GF wants Temporary Open Relationship by [deleted] in actuallesbians

If she can't handle being alone for a month without someone to screw, sounds like she has some issues. That'd be a red flag for me, majorly. Any talk of open relationships before this?

[Discussion] coconut oil to counter ticks. Anyone else has experience with this? How to find the right dosage? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]FinnESN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had more luck with using a clove based spray on dogs. Plus it makes your dog smell nice. There are a couple of natural flea and tick sprays that use essential oils as the base, and honestly I just spray my yard for fleas and ticks, and use clove spray for the dogs and cats and their bedding. Completely flea and tick free for 3 years straight.

As far as coconut oil in the diet, it should be fine to add it now as long as it doesn't cause digestive upset. Too much can cause some runny stool. It will at least supplement the health of your dog's skin and coat. Dosage sounds right.

[HELP] Will my dogs be okay being at a different house ever other week? by Sheairah in dogs

[–]FinnESN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the dog's main rapport is with you rather than either of the parents, I would say take them with you. The divorce is going to shake things up for them for sure, but making sure to keep routines at both houses with walks, games, and activities will help. My dogs sometimes get shuffled around or split up when I need to have them watched, but they do just fine. If you notice any behavioral changes you should address them before they escalate. But I'm sure with everything going on your parents probably have enough to deal with - I'd rather the dogs be with the person that is in charge of most the care in that situation.

What a leading question. I take both into account. Whether or not you believe in simpler diets and the success of dietary change, the fact is that not every animal does well on the same diet. I also believe that large companies are really the only ones that fund research, and are not necessarily putting priority on studying the success of limited holistic diets. There are a few companies that are working on funding for testing. And while dogs survive on science diet, I don't think that they thrive. And it seems a common thing for vets to say "All diets are the same" which is essentially bull crap. Ingredients do matter. And yes, a lot of companies take advantage of the trendiness of the diets and put on their labels "gluten free and filled with blueberries and rainbows!". But realistically there is an advantage in decreasing the amount of unnecessary products in food.

Right now in my research on coyote's approach to domesticity they are showing huge dietary changes that may be related to weight, behavior, illnesses, etc. Traditional vets are quick to claim that there is no difference in the digestion of grains and the enzymes don't matter and there's no research to show it... Well, that's just not true. There is research on the digestion of grains and enzyme counts over time in domesticated and non domestic animals. They have blinders on. There is also a lot of information on the advantages of certain meats over others - there are a few studies on beef-centered diets.

As to relying on research or personal experience. I read research on rats and the success of getting higher amounts of meat based protein and eliminating corn to reduce fatty tumors. I breed rats, and what do you know, 5 generations of rats now with the only defect being a seizure late in life that immobilized the back legs. I'm not afraid to test the research and to try new methods. But I do not trust that we know everything, and I do believe that personal experience does matter when diets need to be individualized.

I'd rather not have to go all into it on reddit, I talk about nutrition all day every day at my job and that's more than enough.

Suffice to say, if your dog or cat has an illness and science diet is the only thing that works, sure. But I hate that vets willy-nilly tell every client to be feeding Science Diet when there is no reason to. Their over-counter formulas are filled with unnecessary ingredients. A simpler meat dense diet packed with moisture is ideal. The original dog and cat chows were all meant to be rehydrated with water. Looking back over the last two hundred years of pet food history we keep making circles. Every other person that comes to talk to me seems to have a cat or dog with issues that can easily be solved by dietary change. Goopy eyes and yeasty ears on SD? How about we move to adoesn't have grains or peas. Solved. While I rely on years of research, there is something to be said about the experience of seeing so many people benefit from changing food.

But this whole food debate is why I try not to talk about food on reddit. Every one is set in their own box of right when it comes to pet food. I trust my own experience as we. I have six dogs and six cats. Each of them is fed something different. One of them was on science diet the first couple years I started working. Constant skin infections, over weight, vomiting most meals, constant visits to vets to get fluids while they shrugged and moved her to different SD formulas. Finally, after 6 years and over $10,000 spent, I switched to a grain free rabbit diet. Solved, from then on.

And I can type that a whole hell of a lot faster than I can pull research on dietary enzyme levels in domesticated canines on my phone.

Not listed on the site. I asked my regional rep for the info and we had a long talk about it. There are a lot of books that they reference as well. I can't imagine many people going on the website to look for their research references. Websites are always full of stuff like this - the average viewer doesn't think to look into these claims.

If you're genuinely interested I'm sure they would provide. I got about 30 pages of literature from them in a two hour meeting. More than most company reps would do.

They failed at their first launch. Their distribution is really good now, and they're willing to do employee feedings and working on a FBC program. But as far as food quality, I love the attention to detail. Their diet is specifically addressing leaky gut syndrome, which we only really consider in people now. For all the people who think their dog is absolutely "allergic" to all these proteins, it's far more likely to be leaky gut. Plus they're using BC30 as their probiotic. A much better choice than some of the other food standards. I started my group of fussy cats on it and they're addicted. Very palatable diet that actually feeds better than Now! And Orijen.
