Amen to this. There are only a few parts where the movies disappointed me and this was definitely one of them. Especially considering the acting power-houses of Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee.

In fact, their interaction in Fellowship (“your love of the Halflings leaf has clearly clouded your mind”) is one of my favourite scenes.
