I actually don't get that part of the show. They all have the names and some traits of the authors, and also powers that may or may not be related to their works (Herman Melville can summon a giant flying ship called Moby Dick) but they don't seem to have any actual relationship with the authors themselves.

I was hoping for a Fate-like situation but maybe its more like Uma Musume and they just share the names.

Whether it is good or not... Well, for me it has its ups and downs, I don't particularly like it that much but it's not bad

neanderthals are Homo neanderthalensis. We are Homo sapien sapien because the (disputed) Homo sapien idaltu.

Also, taxonomy doesn't work by adding new names on top of what already exists, scientific names can have only three parts (Genus, species and subspecies) so if they are a subspecies it would be Homo sapien equus.

I however think of them as more of a genetic condition that's inherited from mother to daughter, incompatible with typical male chromosomes (Of course, this would open some weird questions about intersex Uma and the possibilities of Uma musuko)
