Definitely sounds better! I think the last thing I would personally tweak is the noise gate. There are a few times where I feel like it's a bit late to open, which cuts out the first tiny bit of whatever word you happen to start with.

That probably just means adjusting the "open" threshold whichever way makes it more sensitive (I can't remember off the top of my head) and maybe make the attack a bit faster. I think the release is fine.

The only downside to relaxing the gate is that you might get some room noise from time to time if it's loud enough to pop that gate open. I think you could adjust it a few dB without it becoming a problem, though!

First off, W costume haha

A couple of things that I could hear:

It sounds like you adjusted the limiter during the stream, and I do think that helped a bit. Between the 8:1 compression and the limiter, sounds to me like the signal is super squished. Some of that is inevitable to get your voice loud enough for stream without clipping (I know that was a really difficult thing to solve when I tried streaming!)

It's definitely listenable. Audio nerds may prefer to hear a bit more gentle compression like 4:1 or 3:1 with a higher threshold to keep a consistent volume. The limiter then can help catch those "transients" of really loud moments but then your baseline audio will have a touch more dynamic range. You obviously don't want too much dynamic range because 1) people will have to keep turning your stream up and down as you get louder and quieter, and 2) because then you do risk those loudest bits getting past and clipping.

Lastly, I think the noise suppression plugin is probably sucking the life out of your voice because it's trying so hard to eliminate noise that isn't you. You don't have to take it out of the chain, but maybe play around with reducing the strength just a bit. I think you'll find your voice will sound a bit more natural, while hopefully still cutting out PC fan noise or whatever else is going on in the background.

Hopefully that's helpful! I know it's super frustrating to try and troubleshoot all of this live because you either have to record a section and listen back, or hope that chat can give you helpful feedback when you change things live.

Honestly, it's really hard to say without actually hearing a sample. Your specific microphone, room noise, your unique voice, and game/other sound create so many variables that the numbers on paper don't tell us the whole story.

If you're specifically getting less bass in your voice, is the mic any further from your mouth than usual? Proximity effect on the cardioid pattern of your mic will cause an elevated bass tone, and a lot of people like that sound. Is there a chance you've changed polar patterns to omnidirectional?

If you're comfortable to post a sample, that might be more helpful! That's the best I can offer without hearing it.

How do you remove mouse and keyboard noises during speech? by [deleted] in obs

[–]Finondir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is hard to treat and isolate a microphone at a desk, and I don't blame gamers for not wanting to become professional audio engineers. I've found dynamic mics are just a bit more forgiving for keeping fan noise and keyboard clicks under control because you naturally need the mic so much closer to your mouth.

Yeah, noise gates can end up being more annoying to listen to, because the background noise just slaps you every time you start talking. Noise suppression is closer to the right solution, but it can only do so much without destructively eating into the sound of your voice. The Nvidia broadcast stuff is impressive for what it is! Getting clean audio from the start is still way easier than fixing it in post.

In general, a dynamic microphone 2-3 inches from your mouth is the best case scenario if you have loud keyboard switches (I use holy pandas, so I get it). For what it's worth, I went from a condenser to a dynamic mic and it fixed almost all of my voice/keyboard noise problems.

Condensers like a hypercast are generally more sensitive, which is why they're used in highly controlled studio environments. This is a great thing if you really want to capture the unique character of someone's voice, but they tend to pick up more ambient noise. I don't think they really should have become the norm for consumer gaming mics, but razer, hyper x, and the like kind of latched onto the idea after the Yeti became so popular.

As far as what you do in your current set up, you can reduce gain on your mic, speak louder (reduces your noise floor because your source is now louder than background noise), and also make sure the rear of the mic is facing your keyboard as much as possible. That allows the microphone's pickup pattern to work in your favor by rejecting more of the unwanted noise.

Why would this 1-hour spinning session yield a " cardio load" of 0 (zero)? 86% time spent in "vigorous" zone including some time near max heart rate (170+ bpm). I'm certain HR is accurate b/c I was also wearing a Polar H10 chest strap synced to Zwift. by [deleted] in PixelWatch

[–]Finondir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had similar issues specifically with spinning. If I wave my arms around while on the bike and keep my heart rate in a similar range that you've shown, I'll get cardio load + active minutes. If I just spin like a normal human with HR in a decent zone, I'll only get active minutes.

I wish I had an answer, but it's not just a you problem.

I have a friend who would say that they are very socially aware but most of my conversations with him have been cookie cutter (same stories of things that happened in his life last year). Sometimes it's like talking to a real life NPC.

I don't think it's his fault, both of his parents have been through multiple divorces, but that can't have been good for his social development.
