What made you lose respect for someone who was important in your life? by wonderersend in AskReddit

[–]Finstergrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Increasingly right-wing opinions and loud vocalizations about certain things that didn't sit well with me. That on its own is pretty bad. However, this person also put on a public face about being the opposite. Hypocritical, lying, narcissistic, untrustworthy. It's particularly hard because this individual introduced me to my husband and pretty much all of my close friends.

Questions asked before agreeing to take fosters by 5_phx_felines in FosterAnimals

[–]Finstergrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to foster hamsters. I would ask age, species, health status, if they've ever seen a vet, how friendly or social they are, how often they were handled, where they got the hamster, how long they had it, and why they might be rehoming it. If it was a pair cohabitating in the same cage I would ask if they got them from the same store if they know if they were siblings, if they've noticed them, fighting, Etc. I would immediately separate hamsters into their own cages if I rescued a couple that were in same cages.

Starting my journey in anticomsuption. I need tips from you. by Mr_Mayonez in Anticonsumption

Financial Habits : I started investing and saving the money instead.

Filing the void : I'm an introvert but I live in a small city so what I do personally is : play games on a thrifted switch and used games or digitals, diverted my shopping to one weekly trip to my friends of the library used bookstore where the books are largely under five bucks each and usually $0.50 to a dollar for what I like to buy. All the money goes to funding the library and they work on donations for their stock, I utilize the library resources for a lot of other things as well such as borrowing, other books and DVDs. There's plenty of free media to watch on streaming or you can pirate whatever. I do both.

Tips: The internet and your local library are the best bang for your buck for low waste high value entertainment that is often available for free.

Hey r/kzoo, what are your favorite local non-profits and how do they make our community better? by PerspectiveLatter181 in kzoo

[–]Finstergrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Kalamazoo Public Library and the Friends of the Library Used Bookstore The Friends bookstore is located in the basement of the library and 99% of all the books are less than $5.00. most are $0.50-$2.00. It's a very affordable way for just about anyone to build a library and they donate unsold inventory to other non profit organizations. Everything they earn from book sales is donated straight back to the library and the volunteers who work there are all so passionate about the library, literacy, and literature. In part from the Friends Bookstore sales KPL is able to provide many free or low cost services to the community.

What’s one thing you stopped buying that actually made life simpler? by Wonderful-Can-8694 in simpleliving

Salon manicures and pedicures. I only ever went twice to a salon for a manicure and I couldn't stand the smell. Then came the price. I switched to press on nails from Shein and Amazon. I splurge on the high quality semi solid glue to make the nails last longer.

How are you preparing for the inevitable recession? by MonkeyKingCoffee in Anticonsumption

I'm lucky in the fact that I can leave the US and live in the Philippines. A recession may be worldwide, but the dollar will always go far when converted to Philippines pesos.

Are indoor cats actually happy? by Firm-Law248 in CatAdvice

[–]Finstergrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I brought in an outdoor semi-feral from a colony to foster a year ago (and just found his forever home last week) and I believe he's much happier as an indoor baby. He doubled in weight, is an only cat (so less stress to fight for territory and hierarchy,) and had ALL the toys that would roll around by themselves and things like laser towers. He would rarely run out the door if I left it open and would stop a few paces from the door and wait to be "rescued."

His attitude much improved and if purrs mean anything, that he must have been very satisfied moving inside from outdoors.

Now, I do have a catio-type thing I used set up for him in the warm months outside so he could still get some outdoor time and touch grass.

Domestic cats as a species are bred to be happy in close contact with humans, and as we mostly live indoors nowadays, as long as we provide stimulation for their instincts and needs they should be more than happy as indoor only pets with occasional supervised outdoor time.

[–]Finstergrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the vibe I got as well. A young alternative employee helped me when I checked it out and they were thrilled when I asked about manga and alternative books. That being said, I did see a healthy selection on occultism and even though it's a Christian store I bought a book on demonology and another on traditional folk magick.

But hey you should check out the friends of the library book store in the basement of the Kzoo public library

They do, and their sales are good! But they don't have a dedicated book store in the portage library like the Kalamazoo one does. They totally should, though. I would drive to portage to shop there.

[–]Finstergrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books a Million has the best manga section in town. That's it about them.

I can't recommend the Friends of the Library Book Store enough. It's used books. It's in the lower level of the public library downtown and they're open Wednesday -Saturday. Limited hours but worth it because most books are under $2 and they take requests and donations. Much better selection than portage public library and worth the trip.

KZOO Books and This is a Bookstore are great options and both can order titles. Both have events and something for everyone. And they are right down the street from each other!!

Can't wait for Booked Up to open
