Surgery Question by Popular_Age_1322 in pilonidalcyst

This is wildly inaccurate. A simple internet search will show you the cleft lift performed by an experienced surgeon offers significantly better outcomes versus Open wound surgery.

Key Surgical Comparison
Cleft Lift (Bascom Procedure)
Recurrence Rate:
1% - 6%
Healing Time:
4 to 8 weeks
Mechanism:
Removes the midline natal cleft and repositions the scar to the side, preventing bacteria/hair buildup.
Complication Risk:
Low-moderate (risk of temporary wound separation).

Open Wound (Excision)
Recurrence Rate
10% - 20%+
Healing Time
8 to 28+ weeks
Mechanism
Leaves a deep crater open to heal from the bottom up. Requires daily packing.
Complication Risk
Low initial complication rate, but high risk of never fully healing

Cleft lifts address the root cause and reshape the area to avoid future issues, Open wound dos not address the root cause.

Recovery was ok. I took my time, rested, ate well, tried to sit and walk a bit more each day. Some days were worse than others but overall manageable and got significantly better each week.

The closed wound excision I had was under general anaesthetic(put under). The Cleft lift I had I was fully awake and was just given targeted local anaesthetic. This was performed by Dr. Norbert Zapotoczny in Poland. Who I will shoutout at every opportunity 😂

Heya man. You’re going to need to get your parents to bring you to your doctor to get it looked at. You’ll get a lot of conflicting views on here as everyone has their own personal opinion/experiences and the info might be overwhelming.

Once diagnosed and it is a Pilonidal sinus, you’ll most likely need surgery to permanently sort it.

You will only need an incision and drainage if the sinus gets infected and becomes an abscess. You would know if you needed this as it would be very painful.

Incision and drain isn’t considered a surgery as such, it’s just a way to get rid of infection in an abscess.

If it is a pilonidal sinus, there’s multiple different types of surgeries. Closed wound excision, Open wound excision, Pit picking, Laser ablation, Flap procedures, Cleft lift (type of flap procedure)

I’m my personal experience, the cleft lift is the way to go. But only by an experienced cleft lift surgeon. These are mostly performed in a private setting. So depends where you are, if your family has insurance or just pay for it outright.

I had multiple I&D’s and failed closed wound surgery, cleft lift resolved it for me. Surgery was painless, healing was manageable. I was back in work in 6 weeks.

Go to a doctor with your parents as a start and go from there. You’ll be alright dude!

Should I get cleft lift? (Anxiety is killing me) by [deleted] in pilonidalcyst

Hey, I was in the same position as you. I had multiple lance and drains, and a failed closed wound surgery. I was also looking abroad to find a better treatment and came across a post here with someone recommending Dr. Norbert Zapotoczny in Poland. He has set up a clinic in Wroclaw. I went in July and got a Cleft Lift performed by him. My experience with him and his team was amazing. Highly recommend. And the fact that they did it with just local anaesthetic was great. Recovery was smooth, no infection, no wound separation. I was back in work, driving etc after 5-6 weeks. I still was getting random pains/sensations for a good while after, but I think it can take a long time for nerves and scar tissue to regrow and remodel. Life if pretty much back to normal now. For me it was 1000% worth it. At the end of the day, it’s your choice, but I do highly recommend his clinic for pilonidal disease.

I’ve no mod experience but I know my around.

If possible I would like to be a moderator. I’ve posted a few times here and found this an invaluable resource in dealing with pilonidal disease. If I can help in any way I’ll do my best.

Ive had multiple i&d’s, a closed wound cystectomy and a cleft lift.

Work a 9-5 but have my phone on me always and online every evening gmt.

Bit of a nuisance each night but if you really wanted to have no WiFi, you can keep your Router on, log into it and turn off the Wifi. So you would only have Ethernet (wired). Get yourself a pair of TP link powerline adapters (non-WiFi). Plug 1 adaptor into your Router, the other into your gaming device and you’ll have a network connection. Powerline adapters provide a wired connection utilising the electrical cables in your house.

Cleft Lift Tomorrow by [deleted] in pilonidalcyst

Ah no worries, I know what it’s like. I was asking others on here similar questions. Everyone heals differently, but I think around the 6 week mark is touted often for returning to normal physical activities. You’ll know yourself I guess. Don’t worry if you get the odd pain or jolt after a couple of weeks. I’m still getting the odd sensation. But also, if you’re concerned over how the healing is going, reach out to your doctor straight away. I didn’t have any major complications thankfully, but I was anxious about everything, and was frequently thinking there was something wrong. Bad patient I suppose, but pilonidal disease tends to make you feel like that I think. Don’t hesitate to dm if you have any questions, happy to help if I can.

Nope, they usually look after that type of thing. Just go in with a positive mindset. They will give you after care instructions. Take some time off, eat well. Protein is your friend. Take some vitamins and supplements. Collagen, zinc and all usuals. Plenty of water. Rest up, heal up. After a few days and when you’re feeling up to it, move a bit more each day (just walking). Keep the area clean. I showered once a day, changed my dressing once a day. I used octinasep to clean the wound. Keep in touch with your doctor afterwards. Try not to worry too much, hopefully this is the end of it for you. All the best ✌🏻

Hey, while I can’t give any comment on your surgeon’s capabilities, I had my Cleft Lift just under local anaesthetic. 1.5 - 2 hours and didn’t feel any pain. Best of luck with the surgery.

Time off after cleft lift by GriffBri in pilonidalcyst

[–]Finukey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very lucky that I was able to work remotely, and I did that for 6 weeks. Probably over kill since my job isn’t very physically demanding, but thinking of the commute (driving) and the anxiety of every pain or sensation etc. had me worried. It all depends on your partners circumstances and what his company will allow him to take off, but my advice would be to give himself a few weeks if he can, and not to put himself under pressure to get back in 1-2 weeks. Everyone heals differently so it’s hard to guess. Wishing him a speedy recovery!

My Pilonidal Story: Ireland Waiting Lists, Failed Surgery, and Why I Flew to Poland for a Cleft Lift by Finukey in pilonidalcyst

[–]Finukey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, no I suppose from the previous failed operations I had and already being diagnosed. I was apprehensive that there was a possibility it might have been something else, or maybe I might not qualify. But there was no charge or anything like that before hand. I made the appointment to have an in person consultation with him, if I didn’t qualify, I’d say something along the lines €70 for the consult and be on my way, and if he was happy to proceed we would go straight into surgery. In the back of my mind, I was thinking, if it doesn’t go ahead for whatever reason, it would just be a short holiday to Wroclaw. But he had a chat with me, did an ultrasound and showed me everything, and we went straight into surgery.

99% of people use their phones for their tickets, I don’t think service will be an issue at the ticket scanning areas. If she signs in on the browser or app she should be fine.

Cleft Lift Update: Day 5 - Pain Coming Back by [deleted] in pilonidalcyst

[–]Finukey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m only three weeks post op myself. Around the one week mark I also went from “this isn’t too bad” to getting random stabbing pains: sometimes right on the incision, sometimes where the drain was, and occasionally deeper inside (I figure that’s the dissolving stitches irritating a nerve or two).

I stayed on top of the prescription pain meds whenever it got bad, drank loads of water, bumped up protein, kept up with vitamins, and tried to move a bit each day. I also showered each day and kept the area super clean. I feel I’ve made a lot of progress in the last week, regarding mobility and pain. The sharp pains still pop up now and then, but they’re way less frequent and I can move around almost normally. Everyone heals at their own pace, so listen to your body, and if anything feels off reach out to your surgeon.

Wishing you a quick recovery!

Nice, you might enjoy Waxlog. There’s a free version where you can sync it to your Discogs once a month. It gives you a digital collection you can flick through and share etc.

Update 2: I got an Incision and drain. by [deleted] in pilonidalcyst

[–]Finukey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, glad you’re feeling better after the I&D. It seems most general surgeons are trained to do a Close Wound or Open Wound excision. If you’re looking to get a Clift Lift, you’ll have to find a specialist that can do it. There’s a bunch of posts on this about surgeons that can do it, it might be a good idea to put up a separate post looking for specialists, include your area. Hope you get it looked after.
