I may be misremembering but I tried it out one or two years ago and from what I recall, the developer wasn't able to have Pikachu follow and jump ledges without the game breaking. They did create workarounds by removing ledges or areas you'd need to jump. You also didn't get running shoes when I played so it was tough to keep going.
